Kentucky Pulls Kid's Scholarship (Take 2)...

Featured Replies

Some of the info leaking is that UK never offered the kid a scholarship.

Larry Vaught is working on a story about that situation.

Larry's article Looks like UK actually took away the offer from both kids and then only reoffered the better athlete a grey shirt and left the other kid hanging with two weeks till signing day to get tapes sent out to find another school. So instead of being better that it looked at first it is worse.

But that is the pickle you get in when you say my school or coach is better than that etc. the world of recruiting is cut throat and UK is getting better so there is more pressure to improve each year and get better players. I agree with what LV says to a point, it is wrong, ethically it is not a nice thing to do, but unfortunately we have to look at this both ways, if the kids are not that good and Brooks, Petrino, or Kragthorpe or whoever the coach is has an obligation to the school and the fans to get the best players they can get. Of course there are ethical points, rules and niceitys to concider, but all in all this is the nature of big time athletics and the pressure we as fans place on programs to win.

So, since Larry Vaught has finished working on the story, when can we expect some more posts in this thread based on his conclusion:

Weiner thinks Minor, who did not have any other major scholarship offers, will find a place to play. However, it's not going to be easy for him to find another school, with signing day set for Feb. 7, as it was for Durham when his offer was withdrawn in the fall.

Something not right

Brooks has not made many wrong moves during his four years at Kentucky. However, even if there was a miscommunication here, something is not right about this situation. If Minor's academics were a problem, why let him visit? If Archer's evaluation was not accurate on Minor or Broha, why offer either a scholarship?

Minor might not be an in-state player like Durham, but this move by UK to withdraw his offer seems just as wrong as what Petrino did to Durham, even if Weiner is not being nearly as critical of UK as Larkey was of Louisville. And don't use the excuse that this happens all the time in big-time athletics. It's not right and that doesn't matter whether it happens at Louisville, Kentucky or any other school.

Weiner implies that UK's 8-5 season and Music City Bowl win coupled with Archer's departure changed his players' status at Kentucky.

"I think Kentucky had a great season. When you have the kind of season they had, it certainly helps recruiting from their standpoint and certainly attracts good talent," Weiner said. "Sometimes that leads to decisions over numbers and talent. I'll leave it at that."

An interesting part of the article that I noticed was the coach never mentioned talking to UK's coaches about them offering Minor a scholarship. He just said that Minor came back from his visit and said he committed to UK.

As far as Broha goes a grey shirt offer is still a full ride scholarship. I dont really have a problem with that.

Now, if UK did pull Minor's scholarship because they do not think hes good enough, then that really upsets me at the UK's staff and I think its wrong.
