After taking its lumps the last few seasons with an underclassmen heavy varsity team, John Hardin brings experience, starting nine seniors on defense and four seniors on offense after going 4-7 last season. Most of these kids have been playing varsity ball for 2-3 seasons and are primed for a breakout season.

On defense, the Bulldogs return four of their top five tacklers, including senior linebacker Cameron Moore and sophomore lineman Elijah Luna. Cameron Moore finished last season with 118 tackles while Elijah Luna led the team with 10 sacks and had 71 tackles. Moore will have some help in the defensive backfield, led by linebacker T.J. Williams and Malcolm Adams. Williams had 101 tackles, including 23 for lost yardage, and Adams had 43 tackles last season. Along the defensive line, Luna will have help from seniors Damien Lyons, Landon McCollum and Jaliel Shelby. Lyons and McCollum each played in 12 games for the Bulldogs as freshmen and are coming into their own as seniors. In the secondary, seniors King Martin, M.J. Hayes, Nate Gayfield and junior B.J. Stewart, all have experience. and should prevent a lot of big plays downfield.  Martin finished with 73 tackles last year followed by Hayes with 39 tackles. Gayfield had eight tackles and returned a fumble 103 yards for a touchdown.

On offense, the Bulldogs return most of their firepower from a season ago, including junior running back Cavalli Pittman and junior quarterback Austin Richardson. Austin Richardson threw for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns with three interceptions in 108 pass attempts as a sophomore. He also gained 183 yards and scored two TDs on the ground. Richardson must be more consistent in his accuracy throwing downfield IOT keep defenses honest.  Cavalli Pittman rushed for 882 yards and eight TDs on 102 carries last season and also had 11 catches for 200 yards and a touchdown. Junior Jakobi Linton at running back and Williams at fullback add to the depth of this team. Senior Kam McFayden returns with experience at the wide receiver position as well as D.J. Hightower at tight end.

On the offensive line, Lyons will be joined by seniors Jason Scott, junior Tristan Goodman and freshmen Kaysen Cato and X’zayvion Farrar who show alot of promise and will keep John Hardin competitive for years to come with their talent and size.

Sophomore Ashton Russell returns as a field goal kicker who made four of five field-goal attempts and converted 26 of 29 extra-points last season.

Last Season, Hancock County won this matchup in overtime 6-0.

I expect to see John Hardin come out on top in this re-match.

My prediction:

John Hardin 31

Hancock County 13

Lots of excitement regarding this JH team and lots of buzz going around the community. Haven't had that in a couple of years. Excited to see the Dawgs play this season. Lots of returning talent that has played A LOT of varsity reps. Next 2 years should be very good to the Dawgs.

Need to take care of business against Hancock Friday night. I went to the scrimmage last Friday at JH (Jamboree vs Bullitt Central, Grayson and Fort Knox) and JH was clearly the best team there. However, this is the first game of the year so mistakes will likely be plentiful. First game with the new student section and turf field completed, so I just hope the energy is back at the Dawg Pound Friday night!

JH - 34

Hancock - 17

Probably hard to gauge how good JH is when you are scrimmaging the likes of Bullitt Central, Grayson and FT Knox?

For sure. Very interested to see how they come out on Friday night.
