That aptly describes the identity of Pikeville football within its small school domain. The Panthers should be a unanimous pick for preseason #1 and favored to join the company of Trinity, Highlands, Beechwood, Mayfield, Boyle County, and Belfry as the only schools to win four consecutive state titles. After turning in one of the top individual performances of finals weekend, Brenden Anthony's name will be floated as a Mr. Football candidate. He'll also comprise ¼ of the best linebacking corp in 1A, and one of the state's best, overall. There are always holes to fill - namely at WR, OL, and DB - but Chris McNamee is at the height of his powers. No one else in 1A has been able to reach those heights in three years. Will 2024 be any different?

Will anyone be able to challenge Pikeville in 1A this year?

I think the two biggest challengers to Pikeville next season will be Sayre and Campbellsville. I still expect the Panthers to be the heavy favorites to bring home their 4th straight title.

Just saw that Kristy Orem is stepping down as AD and girls hoops coach at Pikeville. She's been their AD since 2016, if I'm not mistaken. It will be interesting to see who they hire to replace her, and whether or not there is any attempt to change anything at Pikeville or if the new AD just steps in and keeps things rolling as they have been.

I hope this schedule holds together for them. Pikeville hasn't played ten regular season games since 2016. Dohn Community forfeited last year, so that's the one to keep an eye on.

Corbin and Ironton are great additions. The Panthers aren't resting on the laurels. This is how you stay on top.

I really like this schedule for Pikeville.  For a small school, this is a big time schedule.

Pikeville’s two scrimmages to open the season:

8/8/24 vs Breathitt Co. (on Thursday)

8/16/24 at Floyd Central

I’ve also been told that Pikeville will play a home and home with CAL starting in the 2025 season. The Panthers continue to schedule beasts. Those should be two great games with the way those teams have been playing that last few seasons.

I agree on all counts.

Pikeville scrimmaged Breathitt County last night. The Panthers didn’t show a lot, very basic on both sides of the ball. The running game looked strong. Brendan Anthony, Jayden Justice, Blake Caudill, and Isaiah Stanley all got touches and ran hard. Isaac Duty looked good throwing the ball and the receivers made plays. The offensive line needs work, but that’s to be expected this early in the season. Defensively, Breathitt County moved the ball on their first possession, but after that, the Pikeville D settled in and pretty much shut them down.

Both teams went 10 plays on offense, 10 plays on defense for 3 sets. Then they played 2, 12:00 minute quarters (with a running clock). The game was called after the first quarter for lightning. Pikeville scored 4 times, Breathitt did not score.

Breathitt looked better than they did in last year’s scrimmage against Pikevillle. Again, it was the first scrimmage for Pikeville, so they were very vanilla on both sides of the ball. My takeaways for the Panthers:  they’re big, fast, and physical. If the offensive line can improve, which I expect them to do, Pikeville will be poised for another strong year.

Pikeville has added a game to the schedule. September 27th at Harlan County.
