Interesting quarter breakdowns, Scott wins two of them by 1, ties the other, and then gets boat-raced in the 3rd Q to decide the game.  Kind of quirky.  That, and of course, the FT attempt discrep, were largely impactful.

Highlands starting 5:  Seniors: Vinson, Moeves, Kirst, Junior:  Schick, Sophomore:  Listerman

1st Quarter:

Highlands never trailed in this quarter jumping out to their biggest lead of 13-8, Coach Listerman then got some fresh young legs in to test them out, got a little sloppy allowing Scott to come back with a quarter ending 3 pointer to tie the game after 1.

Nathan Vinson was the star of that quarter slashing up the defense getting to the rim scoring 10 pts out of the 15 the Birds got.  Moeves was I believe 1 of 2 from 3's which was his only point.  Listerman put in a basket to finish off the scoring for the Birds.

Saw from Highlands from the bench:  Jrs:  Yelton, Wallace and Soph:  Bouldin

End of 1:  15-15, the Bears.....

2nd Quarter:

Scott jumped out with a 5-1 run to start the quarter to get their first and biggest lead 20-16.....Birds then went on a nice 6-0 run themselves to regain the lead then it was a nice see saw battle after that with the quarter ending with Scott on top 28-27.  I realize its the first game but Birds having trouble securely passing the boy.  Not keeping turnover stats but its probably not pretty for the Birds.

Birds scoring that half:  Schick leading the way with 6 (trifecta:  2pter, 3pter and a FT), Vinson with 3, Rickard with 2 (the only sub off the bench this quarter), and Listerman with 1....

Gotta run a quick errand to the concession stand.....be back for the 2nd half.

3rd Quarter:

Sorry line to concessions and bathroom were long ones.....

Wow Moeves came to play in this quarter....Hitting 3 treys to go along with a basket and some FTs to lead the Birds with 16 points in the QUARTER!!!  Rounding out the Birds scoring in that quarter was Vinson with 3, Listerman with 3, and Yelton from downton with 3.  Yelton and Boulding were the bench players that saw action this quarter.

Side note for the Scott faithful, I thought the hanging on the rim technical foul call was absolutely ridiculous!!!  I know some coaches wouldn't do it but calls like that I wish the other team would just purposefully miss the Tech foul shots but that's just Sympathetic Frank talking.

Birds biggest lead that half was 10 before Scott was able to put in a basket right at the buzzer to cut it to 8 at the end of the quarter.

End of 3:  Highlands 52, Scott 44

4th Quarter:

Highlands wins this quarter from getting 13 points out of their 23 in the quarter from the Charity Stripe.  Vinson lead the scoring in that quarter with 11 points (5 from the line), Listerman with 7 (3 from the line), Moeves with 2 from the line, Yelton with 2 from the line, and Schick with 1 from the line.

Birds grew their 3rd quarter 8 point lead into a 13 point advantage in the 4th qtr at 65-52 before the game got slowed down with the Free Throw contest.  Scott's got it as close as 5 (73-68), but they ran out of time.....

Highlands bench seeing action was Yelton and Bouldin....

Final:  Highlands 75, Scott 68

Final thoughts:

Birds looked really sloppy in the 1st half....Listerman must have hit that as a main goal in the 2nd half b/c it looked a little cleaner in the 2nd half.  Vinson is all over the court slashing to the basket, swatting at shots getting a couple of blocks.  When Moeves gets hot he is smoking!!!

Scoreboard Stats:

Highlands: Vinson 27, Moeves 21, Listerman 13, Shick 7, Yelton 5, Rickard 2

Scott:  Griffin 16, Sarakatsannis 15, Giffen 14, Eten 7, Huelsman 6, Coleman 5, Evans 5

Scott's issue was they couldn't hit the 3's they went 3 for 15 from 3.

Miscellaneous observation:

Highlands YouTube broadcasting has stepped up their game.  They must have installed a few cameras in the ceiling to give some really nice sideline huddle shots.  Never went to those shots in the game but they were nice when used.

Refs really blew out their cobwebs on their whistles.  A lot of potential ticky tack fouls that probably don't get called later in the season.

The 2 upperclassmen Football players from Highlands didn't see action tonight in Senior Lincoln Hicks and Junior Jackson Arnold.

I could be wrong, but wasn't Sarakatsannis always a Highlands' name?  Interesting to see that family over in Taylor Mill, unless I'm completely mis-remembering them.

Moeves is really a fun one to watch and has developed tremendously as a player the past 2-3 years.

I am still pretty shocked Benke stepped away from basketball this year.

TDD you are absolutely correct with the connection....The Highlands basketball roots run deep and wide with the Sarakatsannis's.

Xarek's dad is Mark (HHS c/o '94)

Xarek's Grandpa is Panny (HHS c/o '57), who went down to play at WKU also

Xarek's Aunt is Tina (HHS c/o '89)

That means his cousins are the most recent HHS stars Zoie (HHS c/o '19) and State Champ Zac (HHS c/o '22).....

Most importantly he is NKY chili royalty being the Great Grandson of the Dixie Chili Founder.....which is getting my hungry for some gators!!!!
