Waggle 12, I think I need to clarify something that you posted about Harlan making it to the semi-finals. I think you should of stated the semi-finals of the region, better know as the second round of the play-offs. You have the first round, second round, regional finals, semi-finals of the state, then the state finals. But like Dragonpappy said, this is a Cumberland thread, if we want to talk about Harlan then we either need to wait on the guru to start the thread on Harlan football or someone needs to start one.

Harlan did make it to the region finals in 99. The other years I'm unsure of. As for the other teams in the county, I'm thinking it's been more than 10 years since any team advanced out of the first round. With the new playoff format, however, I do see Cumberland as one the county favorite to break that streak this year.

Everything is open to individual interpretation, DRAGON PAPPY. There is nothing wrong with your insight.

Reading and writing between the lines is my specialty Brain.....

I also wish that the "Kings of the County" thing wouldn't carry as much of importance as it does for some around the county. Since all county teams began playing each other in 2002, the combined county playoff record has been 2-14, with Harlan holding both victories. Though rivalry games are a special event within comminuties, I think that if as much support had been given to these teams through every game in the regular season, that some of these numbers could have been altered.

Harlan lost in the regional finals in 1979 and 1999.

Evarts won the regional title in 1990 and finished second in 1964, 1967 and 1968.

Cumberland won the region in 1963, 1982, 1983 and 1986 and finished as runner-up in 1980, 1987, 1991 and 1992.

Cawood won the region in 1975 and finished second in 1976, 1977 and 1982.

Thanks, HDE. So I'm guessing the drought for the county schools has been 14 years then. I'm sure that Harlan advanced to the region semi's in 1996.

As for the Gilliam kid last year, am I correct in saying he didn't make the District 7 or SEKC first team last season? He, in my opinion, was Cumberland's most dangerous threat last season, and ended the season as maybe the most underapreciated player in southeastern KY.

Cumberland won a playoff game in 1997 at South Floyd. Evarts won in 1994 and Cawood in 1993.

I think Washington was Cumberland's first-team running back representative on the all-star teams. I would have probably picked Gilliam.

Thanks for the clarification, I would have been badly offbase otherwise. Do you see Gilliam moving from fullback to tailback in Cumberland's Wing-T or is there anyone else that can fill Washington's shoes? I think if Cumberland finds a quality running back, and can leave Gilliam at the fullback position, that they would be much more dangerous offensively this coming season.

:thumb: For Harlan, I think, the big deal was the Cumberland streak of at least 4 years was ended. I think any of the teams would have made a big deal of it had they accomplished it. Again, it would seem strange to me to diminish any accomplishments the kids make. Having said that, I know at least for Harlan, we had tremendous away game fan support up until the end, even in horrible weather. I can't speak for the other teams. I think the future Black Bears have an opportunity to become a power. Its about numbers, the right coaching staff, and the ability of all to integrate together. For Harlan, we continue the small school Class A cycle. AGain, JB does well maximizing what he has. Class A schools with growing communities, jobs, etc can do better.

The Gilliam kid is an outstanding football player. He has good feet and football intelligence. I would say alot of teams would like to have him next year on their side. I like watching him run that middle screen and he sure did make that quick side belly tuff on defenses. I look for Jon to get him the ball early and as often as possible next year. They also might have a surprise or two that nobody knows about next year.

I didn't really see them play this year, but I've heard Coach Reynolds does a nice job of mixing the base dive in there as well with the fullback. Just what I was told. Sounds like Cumberland uses the system well.

Cumberland may well have a final season to remember
