As a kid growing up in Kentucky during to 70's I knew next to nothing about soccer, but I knew who Pele was. At his peak, possibly the most popular person on the planet.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pelé, rest in peace, sir.

The soccer player by which all other soccer players are, and should be, measured.

First soccer player I ever heard of.  I suspect that’s true of a lot of people.

    ? Todos saudam O Rei!

Like Pops, he's the first I became aware of. The German kids in my neighborhood in Munich idolized him, and that's saying something.

The testaments of his greatness by his contemporaries, star players in their own right - Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer, are stunning (see the Wiki link below).
