Would be shocked if Tomcats don't repeat even after what they lost. Deboard will add scoring and toughness. The 6-9 boy from South Sudan I'm sure will play a part this year. Carter will look more like a complete player as his role will increase.

Darkhorse: Morgan County will be much improved with the twins coming over from Elliott.  2-22 last year so not sure what else they got, but the Griffith boys are gritty competitors.

I've heard lots of hype about the Rimmer boy at Russell. I think he is young ( 14?), but he may be a player that puts the region on notice this year.

Caleb Rimmer is the real deal and will only get better. He will be the next Brady Bell as far as the go to guy at Russell with more upside if he sticks it out at Russell through senior year. He's in 8th grade this year.

Yes the young man has a chance of becoming a really good player.  He will not develop like he should if Russell continues to drop good competition.  He needs to play in games against good competition to get better.  Dropping tough opponents and picking up sure fire wins hurts all the players on the team.  It looks good on the stat sheet but that stat sheet won’t mean squat when you play a team that can guard you.  A .500 season playing tough teams will prepare them for post season.  Cup cake schedule will give them a nice season record and go home the first round of the district.

Russell hasn't dropped anyone but Ashland and to be honest Caleb will be fine as he plays AAU which is where recruiting is at and  also where the best of the best play. Caleb will get better by playing AAU than playing high school basketball anyway. That is where he will make his gains by working over the summer.

Caleb doesn't need Ashland to get better plain and simple.

If you look at Russell's schedule you can clearly see Boyd County is still there as well as Rowan County and Morgan  County . There are still good teams on Russell's schedule. Russell also has a trip to the king of the smokies Tournament in TN.

I disagree.  Your High School coach is where your recruiting should originate.  Your AAU team in the summer should be in place  to supplement what is being built in your High School program.  If the high school coach is doing his or her job, they will be the major driver of a player’s recruitment.  I did not say that he needs Ashland.  I said that Russell needs to play good teams to get better.  Stop making it an Ashland thing.  You spun that out of context. This young man is a good player.  It would be a shame if he doesn’t get to play state caliber teams during the season.  Run from no one in the season.

Russell doesn't need to have Ashland on the schedule to  get better. Russell has several of the other top 16th region teams on it plus will play some other good teams in Tournaments. We are going to disagree all day long. You seem like you must be an Ashland fan.

Also coaches evaluate potential prospects in AAU before  ever having any dealing with the kids high school. AAU is a bigger deal than high school as far as getting offers.

Russell stands a chance to make it to Region Tournament as either the Runner up or District championship. I think Russell's biggest issue will be numbers this year. I think they only have 10 on the team based on the roster Coach Cooksey posted on the khsaa. I will wait and see what the ADI preview tab roster says. I guess the good thing is there are 5 seniors and 4 juniors and 1 8th grader. Russell will be really young after 23-24 season.

Some of the top teams in region 16 have 14+ on the roster.

I also disagree,   Unless you are a top 50 kid and he isn’t and probably won’t be.  Big time AAU (shoe circuit) isn’t going to help.  Yeah it’s fun, travel a lot, play with, and against some big time talent.  But at the end of the day HS coaches does matter.  I did see that Brady Bell won player of the year in the 16th.  That’s really good achievement if that’s what you want.   Please remember this if you are the best player and or student in the gym and or the classroom you might want to find another gym or classroom.

Caleb is already  number #45 overall in the class of 2027 per coast to coast preps.
