"The Farm" Plays Host To The Tomcats With District Championship Up For Grabs

Records: Greenup County (6-2) | Ashland (5-4)

BGP Ranking: Greenup County (#9 in 3A) | Ashland (#10 in 3A)

Series History: Ashland leads 40-9 all-time

Table Setter: Not many could have pictured Greenup County, winless on the field last year, sitting at the precipice of a district championship. But here we are, on the eve of one of the biggest nights GC football has experienced in a while.

They'll have to defy history to make this a joyous occasion. The Tomcats have kept Greenup County under their claw since 2000. That's the year Ashland halted a modest three game losing streak in the series before running off the last 23 straight, mostly in blowout fashion. The Musketeers nearly sprung the upset last year at Putnam Stadium, but one of the Tomcats' nine lives bailed them out.

This year, it all goes down on the farm, where sophomore quarterback Tyson Sammons is reaping the success that was sewn over the off-season. He ranks third in the state for quarterbacks in rushing yards. Big brother Mason anchors both the offensive and defensive lines.

Youthful Ashland is growing up before our eyes with sophomores LaBryant Strader and Braxton Jennings leading the team in passing and rushing, respectively, and junior Brandon Houston as Strader's primary target. None of them saw the field much last year. Youth abounds as Greenup County and Ashland convene in an unlikely district championship game.

Ramdates tonight for the district championship game.

Ashland has done a ton of growing up since week one and other than the  Raceland and Wheelersburg games they’ve been in all of the games in the 4th quarter. If they keep it close it’ll be interesting but if turnovers and penalties come into it then Greenup could win by 2-3 scores otherwise it could be a slug fest. Should be great game to watch tonight.

I expect a great game.  I think these two teams are so close it is scary.  What do you think the keys are for Ashland to get the win?  It seems Greenup is leaning on the run game, but they are pretty good at the passing game (I wish they would use the passing game more).  I wonder what is going to be the key for the game for the Musketeers, the run game of the passing game.  Likewise, I think the Greenup run defense is pretty good, I wonder if Ashland will have to rely on the passing game.

No matter, it should be a great game for the District Championship.

Common Opponents:

Raceland 48 Greenup 28

Raceland 34 Ashland 7

Boyd County 29 Greenup 21

Boyd County 8 Ashland 22

East Carter 20 Greenup 21

East Carter 21 Ashland 35

Russell 27 Greenup 28

Russell 14 Ashland 20

Greenup played Raceland better, but both lost to the Rams.  Ashland played East Carter and Russell better, but both beat the Raiders and the Red Devils.  The biggest difference is Boyd County.  Ashland beat the Lions, but Greenup lost to them.

Ashland is 5-4 with their best win being over inter-county rival Boyd County.  They had a scoring shootout with West Jessamine which could be seen as a good game, or was showcasing their lack of defense.  You decide.

Greenup comes in at 6-2 with their best win coming against Lawrence County, handing the Dawgs their only loss of the season.  They played inter-county rivals Russell to a one point game and their other inter-county rival Raceland to a 20 point game, no small feat for those that have faced the Rams.

Well, Little Ram is 27 and a coach now. He’s great. I’m great as well. You know, life gets in the way of fun sometimes.
