So spinning off from the Holmes thread, the 35th district has been owned by Covington Catholic in recent history. They hold the district title for the past three years, the Beechwood Tigers being the champion before this current run. Beechwood would be runner up in 2020. Holy Cross was the runner up in 2021 and 2022. Holmes has been a non-factor in the post season during the last four years.

So some questions:

1) When does CovCath's current district title streak end?

2) Who is the next non-CovCath team to win the district?

3) Will Holmes rise out of the basement with Coach Perkins now at the helm?

4) Will Beechwood be able to make up for their recent losses due to graduation?

5) Will Holy Cross continue the upward trajectory it is set on in the Meyer era or will they tumble to the basement upon his graduation? 

1.  If not this year (22-23), I'd say it will be 3 or more.  

2.  Holy Cross has a puncher's chance this year, to be sure.  

3.  I think Holmes finishes 2nd or 3rd in 2023-24.

4.  I'm on record, in the face of a lot of opposition, that Beechwood's time in the limelight is done for a while in boys' hoops.  Yes, I know there are some nice pieces in the pipe, especially Cash, but I don't see the Tigers approaching the Draud/Boyd era over the next couple of years.  

5.  Far more likely that it is the latter....and hard.  

I'll answer my own:

1. I actually think the Ruthsatz party is set to come to an end in the near future. Now, they can have sustained success obviously with a new coach, but I think they have a max of 3 more in a row.

2. I think Holmes or Beechwood is next.

3. I think Holmes will ride one more year in the basement, though they will compete with Beechwood.

4. I think Beechwood is 3rd or 4th the next two years but if we have seen anything from Coach Goetz, it is that he has shortened the cycle of talent in basketball and raised their low and high points in the cycle. It used to be Beechwood would be BAD for 2 or 3 years, okay for 1 or 2 years, and good for 1 or 2 years. Now, their bottom seems to be okay and they may achieve greatness every 5 or 6 years.

5. I think there are some consecutive fourth place finishes in the post-Meyer future. 

Ok, I will take a stab at this.

1. 2022-2023.  I would think that Holy Cross will have a great shot to take the district this year.  Not many teams in the region will have the pieces that they have.  As good as Meyer is, he has more than adequate help.  Covcath and Ipsaro have help too, but missing a big to try and match up with Gibson.

2. Well based on #1 it would be HC, but after this year I think it will be a crap shoot.  Harney will be great for Beechwood, but they will need more ammo to take down the Colonels.  I think Holmes has more than a few years to be relevant again.  In asking around HC seems to have a nice incoming freshman class and a couple of going to be Sophomores that will make an impact in Varsity this year.  

3. Wish nothing but the best for coach Perkins, but the talent just doesn't seem to be there any time soon.  Makes it tougher when the rest of the teams in the district have good talent and every coach is more than capable of winning games.

4. Boyd is great and can make up for a lot of mistakes.  Harney is a difference maker for sure and has a very bright future.  However, it will be a tough ask for both to try and compete with Covcath and HC this year though. I think if Beechwood can figure out some nice pieces around Harney over the following 3 seasons will be interesting to see if they can make a run.

5. HC is definitely in a win now mode, and if coach Sorrell has them playing on all cylinders they will be a tough out for anyone.  I think its easy to say losing Meyer, Ward, and Gibson at the end of the year will cause a little decline.  I think tumbling into the basement is a bit much though.  As I said earlier they have a good incoming freshman class and a couple of sophomores that will have some experience.  

I believe losing Meyer, Ward and Gibson will be more than a "little decline". 

As noted, after this year, the 35th becomes weaker allowing anything to happen.

Why not

1) I think It could be 3 plus years minimum

2) Holy Cross this year if not then have no idea

3) I think this is a very realistic possibility and could happen in next two years

4) NO

5) Pre June yes, post June NO. HC had a really nice transfer from Wester Brown,

 

Ohio who would’ve made immediate impact for the Indians, I’ve heard he has already left the team. He Could’ve been a really nice piece for HC, averaged 16 plus points a game as a Fresh at western Brown and looked like a really nice prospect at SK summer games!

I’ve actually heard the family loves the area and Scott will likely see it through his youngest boy.

I’ve seen this said multiple times and I’m curious as to where the talent has gone? Are kids going to other districts or across the river? Are they just not coming out for the team? Genuinely curious.
