Lee Rose Passed Away

Featured Replies

Sorry to hear that Irving Kentucky native and Transylvania Coach Lee Rose died yesterday at the age of 85. Rose began his coaching career as an assistant to CM Newton at Transy in 1959. He went on to take over at Transy in 1968 where he coached for 8 years. He then went to UNC Charlotte where in just 3 years he took the 49ers to a NIT runner-up in 1976 and in 1977 he took them to the Final 4. He then went to Purdue for two seasons and took them to the Final 4 in 1980. Rose is only one of 10 coaches to take two different teams to the Final 4. RIP Coach Rose.

Really sold coach and man.  I never heard why he left Purdue coming off a 3rd place finish at the Final 4 to go to South Florida.  Gene Keady took over for him.

He is widely respected within the South Florida program.

Great coach. I remember his Transy days and his later D1 days. He had a player in 1976 named Cornbread Maxwell that almost won Charlotte an NIT. They gave Jack Givens, Rick Robey, Mike Phillips, James Lee, Truman Claytor and Kyle Macy all they wanted and then some.

Met Coach Rose as a very young assistant coach. He was very kind and encouraging. Rest in Peace sir.

Cornbread Maxwell carried that team to the Final 4.  Was a pretty nice Pro with the Celtics.
