The people of New Orleans or the politicians? Now, I know someone will say that the people elect the politician, which is true. However, I believe that there is, in most cases, a difference between ignorance and incompetence.

A year ago I would have said the politicians. However, since the people of New Orleans chose to reelect that clown, Nagin, I think they're just as guilty. Too many people in that swamp are seeking others to blame for their misfortune instead of either looking in the mirror or pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. It makes me feel bad for those who live there and have taken steps to improve their lot.

And in Falmouth, cars were no longer usuable. Houses were GONE. Not flooded and then in need of clean out but some were GONE. All that was left was the foundation. Some businesses were gone and never reopened.

 

And Falmouth is rebuilding. It didn't happen overnight or within months. We lost our house in March and moved into another house of our own in September. In some cases, it has taken years to overcome and rebuild. Some moved out of the community and never returned.

 

Personally, I am still paying on loans that I had to take to recover from where I was left financially after the flood. And will be paying on those loans for several more years.

 

There is not a magic wand to wave over the situation and make everything hunkydory. It takes time IMO from experience.

 

Comparing the volume of distruction in Falmouth to New Orleands is like comparing the Red River Gorge to the Grand Cannyon. And according to some BGPers, you should have been up and running the next day.

1 - If you are young and healthy enough to work, get to work for the US Government rebuilding you city, block, whatever.

 

2 - Don't use the debit card the US government gave you to buy season tickets for the Saints as some where found to do.

 

3 - Dont re-elect the racist, incompetent mayor that helped put you in this situation.

 

Currently the US government is paying anyone that can/will learn to drive a truck about $15.50 an hour to help get rid of trash and debris.

 

They are also paying about $18.00 an hour to those who will WORK in construction and get on the job training while learning a trade.

 

 

Problem is out of the 200,000 and some odd thousands people living there now, only about 2,000 took the government up on this. The rest would rather draw a check at the house or complain and not do anything about it.

 

 

How do I know this, my family sent 2 trucks down there and in 2 weeks time it cost us about $5,000 in damage from people trying to steal the wheels, tires, lights and fuel out of the trucks as well as both drivers getting held up. When members of my family went there to file insurance claims and get our money they found the flyers for the above jobs and my aunt works for Allstate insurance in Florida and called and told me about the jobs above

 

 

I salute the ones that moved and used the government to start over with more, I also salute the ones that are working and trying to better themselves and their community.

 

I think the ones that whine and complain deserve everything they get and do not feel sorry for them because my family tried to help them, but we got robbed in return.

So...let's say you are the banker holding a note for say, 80,000.00 on John Doe's home that was demolished in New Orleands, the on which the insurance company refuses to pay on, and Mr. Doe can't pay on his not because his job is no longer there and he wants you to loan him 100,000.00 so he can build another home...I am sure being a wise businessman and a compassionate person you would loan Mr. Doe the money AND teach him how to drive a truck.

I am truly sorry for you experience. I will assume that the relief trucks that you sent were relief trucks. For that, you are to be commended. I hope that this one experience will not effect your giving nature for future situations.

 

I can't stress this point to everyone strongly enough - if you have never been poor or if you do not understand how people could choose to "sit and complain, rather than work", read Ruby Payne's Understanding Poverty. It is extremely enlightening.

If that is a slam towards Falmouth, then those BGPers are wrong.

 

But with your history of posts and the slant to them, I am taking that as a slam towards the BGPers who feel that the people of New Orleans not being up and running. And that I cannot give a firsthand witness to, except to try and empathize from my experiences of losing a house to a flood and trying to rebuild from it. I can tell you it is possible and hard and emotionally overwhelming. I can tell you that this action was my testimony on how God will be there for you at these times and changed/deepened my faith in my seeing how God was there for me at this time. I can tell you that it doesn't come overnight. I can tell you that if you don't listen to the city officials, as some in Falmouth did not, you may die, you may be stranded and have to ask others to risk their lives to save you.

 

Total volume of destruction yes. Percent of city destroyed, no. Effect on the city/county's economics, no. Effect on the lives of the people involved, no.

The damage was the same. It was the volume of damage that was different. I don't see how you can claim that a person whose house was ripped off the foundation in a flood plain lost anything less than a person in NO.

So tell me why there is an insurance issue.

From my experience, the only ones that have the problem you mentioned above are the ones who still owed on their homes. Those who did not owe anymore, mostly chose NOT to carry flood insurance. That was a problem in Falmouth. They made that choice because it is very expensive and then paid for it when they lost the home.

 

Also, if I remember correctly, businesses are limited on the amount of flood insurance they could carry and were not eligible for the FEMA free money. They could get small business loans but the FEMA free money was for private citizens to rebuild and not for businesses. As I said, they could get loans but not the "free" money that FEMA answered.
