BluegrassPreps.com 14th Region Week 5 Review - New Years Edition

Featured Replies

First off, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a very happy new year. We are halfway through the 2021/22 basketball season and are inching closer to post season play. With that said, let's take a look back at week5 in the 14th Region.

1) Perry County Central (12-2):

Commodores have good showing at Mason County Invitational: Perry County Central made the trip up to Maysville after Christmas to take part in the Mason County Invitational Tournament. Perry County Central would take on and lose in the first round game against the home team, Mason County Royals 72-61. Perry County Central would bounce back however and win their next two games, defeating both Fleming County 65-56 and Walton-Verona 70-61.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Leslie County (District Game), Thursday at East Ridge, Saturday vs. Letcher County Central.

2) Breathitt County (10-2):

Bobcats win Florida Tournament: Breathitt County traveled to Florida after Christmas and took part in the Sandestin Hilton Beach Blowout at Freeport FL. Breathitt County would win all four games and claim the championship. Bobcats defeated Good Hope (AL) 91-58, Brookwood (GA) 80-43, Winter Park (FL) 55-51, Pike Liberal Arts (AL) 56-53 -- JR Guard Austin Combs with the win on a 3 at the buzzer.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Jackson City (14th Region All "A" Classic)

3) Wolfe County (9-4):

Wolves win Lake Cumberland Classic: Wolfe County traveled to Pulaski County to participate in the Lake Cumberland Holiday Classic (played at multiple locations). Wolves got things started with an overtime win over Smith County (TN) 56-49, Wolves would defeat Somerset (on the Briar Jumpers own home court) 61-54. Finally Wolfe County would defeat Aiken (Cincinnati OH) 42-32 to win the Lake Cumberland Holiday Classic.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Owsley County (14th Region All "A" Classic).

4) Hazard (5-3):

Hazard Has Week Off: Hazard didn't play any last week.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Buckhorn (14th Region All "A" Classic).

5) Knott County Central (3-7):

Patriots Struggling: The Patriots have lost 3 of their last 4 games. They played in a tournament down in Henry County where they won just 1 game. They defeated Trimble County 57-46 but lost to Spencer County 79-65, Iroquois 60-38. This is not the same Knott County Central team we all are use to seeing.

Upcoming Schedule: 14th Region All "A" Classic. Dates/Opponents To Be Determined.

6) Cordia (4-3):

Lions have week off: Cordia did not touch the court last week.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Bell County.

7) Letcher County Central (4-5):

Cougars have week off: Letcher County Central had week off last week.

Upcoming Schedule; Friday vs. Owsley County, Saturday at Perry County Central.

? Estill County (5-6):

Engineers finish 4th in Bath County Tournament: Estill County traveled to Bath County this week to participate in the Dan Swartz Classic. They opened up with a thrilling, coming from behind win over Russell 63-61 to advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals wouldn't be so good to them as they would get crushed by 33 to Ryle 94-61. Estill County would take on Elliott County for 4th place. Elliott County would have to come from behind to derail the Engineers in a thriller 59-56.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Leslie County, Friday vs. Powell County (District Game).

9) Buckhorn (5-8?

Wildcats travel to Florida: Buckhorn traveled to Florida to participate in a tournament. I only see two scores, Buckhorn lost both. Bishop Verot (FL) 56-49 OT. Atlantic (FL) 57-39. Their was a third game that I do not have the score for.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Hazard (14th Region All "A" Classic), Thursday at Oneida Baptist Institute.

10) Lee County (7-5):

Bobcats take two in Williamsburg Tournament: Lee County took two out of three games in the Bill Perkins Holiday Classic at Williamsburg. Defeating Johnson County (TN) 69-62 in the opening round. Lee County would fall in the second round to Kings Academy (TN) 62-61. They would bounce back and defeat Leslie County 65-63.

Upcoming Schedule: Wednesday vs. TBD (14th Region All "A" Classic), Friday at Berea.

11) Powell County (4-7):

Pirates Struggling: Powell County traveled to Bath County to take part in the Dan Swartz Classic. They lost two out of the three games. They fell to Elliott County 78-55 in the opening round game, they would defeat Jenkins with ease 86-51 but would fall in a heart breaker to Russell 62-61.  Pirates have now lost 4 of their last 5 games.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Bath County, Friday at Estill County (District Game), Saturday at Jenkins.

12) Leslie County (2-8):

Leslie County drops 4 of last 5 games: Leslie County lost two out of three games in the Bill Perkins Holiday Classic at Williamsburg, causing them to lose 4 of their last 5 games. They defeated Trinity Christian Academy (FL) 63-24 but would lose to Barbourville 52-41 and Lee County 65-63.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Perry County Central (District Game), Tuesday vs. Estill County, Friday vs. TBD (14th Region All "A" Classic).

13) Jackson City (2-8):

Jackson City loses 4 straight: Jackson City traveled to Whitefield Academy to take part in the Ray Zellar Christmas Classic. They would lose all three games, running their losing streak to four straight. Whitefield Academy 59-38, Cloverport 49-36, Frankfort Christian 60-21.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Breathitt County (14th Region All "A" Classic), Saturday at Heritage Academy.

14) Owsley County (2-7):

Owls have week off: Owsley County didn't play last week.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Wolfe County (14th Region All "A" Classic), Friday at Letcher County Central.

Knott Central is extremely young this year. They have 2 seniors, 0 juniors, and the rest of the team is composed of 8th graders, freshmen and sophomores.
You’re correct in assessing that the Patriots are not the KCC team that we are accustomed to seeing. But as legendary TV sports play by play man, Curt Gowdy, once famously said about a group of young ball players, “their future is in front of them.”

I watched Wolfe County in the Lake Cumberland Classic against Somerset and Aiken(OH).  The LCC is played in a pod system where 4 teams play a round robin at either Somerset, Pulaski, Somerset Christian or Southwestern.  So there end up being 4 winners, one from each pod.

I was impressed with Wolfe County.  They've got 2-3 good shooters, play good defense and their point guard, Wilgus Tolson, is a really nice player.  Somerset is young with only 2 seniors (one of which missed the last 2 games of the tourney against Wolfe and Smith County), but Wolfe looked really good against them and Aiken.

Breathitt Co Jr that hit the game winner was Andrew Combs not Austin Combs.
