Looking ahead (4A) - Redhounds on the hunt to end title drought

Recommended Posts

Corbin football is what you might call an "old money" program, as opposed to the "new money" of 4A contemporaries Boyle County and Johnson Central. The Redhounds have tradition that runs bone deep and reaches back to the pre-playoff days, where they claim a pair of mythical state championships to go with their three playoff era titles. They've only suffered through two losing seasons in the last half century. But despite that incredible consistency and the fact that Corbin is seemingly always expected to be in the championship picture, the Hounds haven't actually hoisted the big trophy in nearly forty years. There have been near misses (2018's one point runner-up to Central) and not so near misses (2002's clobbering at the hands of Breathitt County).

Ending that drought is probably a goal every year, but few seasons have held the potential of the one that lies directly ahead. Corbin enters the 2021 season with expectations that are both sky high and very justifiable. The roster is the most talented in the class, with two future FBS Power 5 players in Treyveon Longmire (top 5 prospect in the class of '22) and Dakota Patterson (#1 prospect for '23). Those two will be supplemented by several other players with Division 1 offers.

Boyle County is Boyle County and Johnson Central is still Johnson Central, plus Franklin County may be here to stay a while and Lou. Central is ever present when talking about championships. In other words, no matter how the playoff bracket shakes out, the 2021 4A champion will have run a rigorous gauntlet. But if you're a Corbin fan, you have to feel good about the make-up of this team. If the Hounds fail to end the drought this year, no one can say it was for a lack of talent.

Just saw today that Knox Central ‘22 RB Seth Huff has transferred to Corbin. Huff amassed just under 2000 yards on the ground during his sophomore and junior seasons. Certainly a huge addition to the already loaded Corbin team.

Corbin will be in the conversation come November. Their best bet is to end up with the #1 RPI to hopefully ease their path to the finals.

All of the top teams in this class have scheduled like they know how important that 1 seed could be this year. Nobody's running away from a challenge.
