Russell gets its first state tournament win since 1976 on the strength of stout team defense, Aubrey Hill's 22 points and 9 rebounds, and Shaelyn Steele's 18 points and six blocks. Jenna Adkins joined them in double figures with 11. 

Reese Smith and Madelyn Lawson each had 11 points to lead Dixie Heights, which saw its 22 game winning streak come to a close.

Congrats to Coach Layne and the Lady Red Devils!! It's amazing that the Shaelyn Steel was a all-conference player in our middle school conference that I have run for the past 15 years. She is going to do a lot of  big things during her years as a Lady Red Devil.

Russel's guard were quick and scrappy.  Add in Hill's presence inside, and they're a tough team.  They get after you on the defensive end.  The key to their continued success in the tournament will be officiating.  If they continue to let them play, they're tough.  If they get officials that call the hand checks, then I could see Russell getting into foul trouble early, and it doesn't appear that they go very deep on the bench.

Dixie just didn't come out with the effort needed to win a state game.  A lot of standing around and watching as Russell was hustling to every loose ball.  Still, a great season for the Lady Colonels.

And hats off to Dixie's student section for showing up.

Russell stayed in foul trouble throughout their region tourney. Definitely a big difference in officiating between Morehead and Lexington.
