Elgin Baylor

Featured Replies

One of the all-time NBA greats, Elgin Baylor, has passed away from natural causes.  He was 86.

RIP

Thank you for this CSF. My dad used to take me to one or two Royals games every year at the old Cincinnati Gardens. The last one was a game with the Lakers.

He was all about Elgin, while Wilt, West, and Goodrich loomed large for me. I remember how disappointed he was when Baylor retired a few games into that season.

Once, we were talking hoops at a family reunion, and the GOAT subject arose. Dad said, "Before Jordan, there was Erving; the original - was Baylor." I didn't get it. Years later, this article in The Undefeated changed my mind.

"Dr. J on Elgin Baylor: 'He was just ballet in basketball.'"

The NBA’s most underrated player. A statement that would have been unfathomable 40 years ago.

If memory serves, UK beat Seattle and  Baylor in the 1958 national championship game.    Rupp's plan was to foul  Baylor out  -  only way to stop him  -  and it succeeded.   Elgin was one of the first "high-flyers" and a brilliant offensive player.
