According to this article, the Reds are open to trading Sonny Gray. Maybe to take a run at Trevor Bauer?

I'm open to the idea depending on what the Reds could potentially get back.  I'd love to keep Bauer, but I just don't see it happening.

Unless the Reds are going back into the rebuilding mode, they better hang onto Gray.  Just my thoughts.

But do you keep Gray at the expense of losing Bauer?  I'd like to keep both but that's not happening.

I just don't see Bauer returning, regardless of some of the talk in the media.

Back to rebuilding mode? Did the rebuilding mode ever stop or come to completion? I remember us trading the 2010 and 2012 champs for peanuts, losing badly for 7 years, and then squeaking into watered down playoffs with players contributing that had nothing to do with said rebuild.

8 years ago or so we traded Jay Bruce, Jonny Cueto, Edinson Volquez, Mat Latos, Todd Frazier, Brandon Philips, Drew Stubbs, Mike Leake, and Aroldis Chapman. Did any of those trades result in the winning record we had in the 2020 shortened season or as least a slightly more interesting 2019 season?

We did trade Alfredo Simon for Eugenio Suarez but that was kind of a pre-rebuild trade. 

Just for giggles, I went back to look up who the Reds got in return for the players you named...

Bruce - - - Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell.  While the Reds probably got the best years of Bruce, what we got in return wasn't much.  

Cueto - - - Cody Reed, Brandon Finnegan and John Lamb.  A year or so after the trade, this looked to be a favorable deal for the Reds.  Now...not so much.  Cueto's been 36-27 since leaving.  Blame Homer Bailey for this one.  He got paid the year before, so there was no money left to sign Cueto long-term.

Volquez - - - Mat Latos (and then eventually trading him for Disco and Chad Wallach).  Not a bad deal, in my opinion.  Latos was actually better W/L-wise than what Edinson had been with the Reds (33-16 vs. 30-18), PLUS, we got Disco afterwards, who was right around .500 (which is what Volquez has been since leaving).

Frazier - - - Jose Peraza, Scott Schebler and Brandon Dixon.  Peraza and Schebler looked like they were both going to be fixtures, and while they had a good year or two, they faded.  Frazier, you can say he was a fan favorite, but he's not really done much better since he left.  HR's and RBI's are about the same, and BA is actually lower.  Neither side won in this one.

Phillips - - - Andrew McKrackan and Carlos Portuondo.  Reds were looking to cut money.  They did that, but really got nothing in return.

Stubbs - - - This is an interesting one.  Stubbs never really lived up to his potential, in my opinion.  So, the Reds got Shin-Soo Choo in return, who was heads and tails above Drew for the one year he was here.  Unfortunately, we gave up Didi Gregorius in this trade too (to the Diamondbacks).  In an interesting turn of fate, this was the trade that sent Bauer to Cleveland.  So, without it...we don't have a Cy Young winner this past year.

Leake - - - Adam Duvall and Keury Mella.  Guess it all depends on what you're looking for.  I liked Leake as a Red.  I also didn't mind what Duvall brought to the table.  And like the trade before, you have to look down the line, too.  When the Reds traded Duvall a few years later, we got Lucas Sims, Matt Wisler and Preston Tucker.  The latter two didn't pan out, but Sims showed promise this past year.

Chapman - - - Reds got hosed on this one.  Rookie Davis, Eric Jagielo, Tony Renda and Caleb Cotham.  Chapman still has more saves as a Red versus since he left (146 to 130), but he's made around $80 million more in New York and Chicago.  Reds just weren't going to be able to afford a $16 or 17 million dollar closer.  But, we gave him away, in my opinion.
