I believe Mariani was 20-4.

Beechwood's first year of football was around 1946 (give or take a year), I can find out for sure. It was coached by Beechwood's beloved Edgar McNabb who went on to become superintendent at Beechwood. Beechwood's first quarterback, Gordon Hood, still attends almost every football game. His wife, Joanne, was a cheerleader for the first team. I doubt either has missed more than a handful of games in the last 60 years.

 

 

Not sure who (if anyone) coached between Edgar McNabb and Coach Walz, but I can get back to you on that one. Coach Walz' daughter, Jamie was a star basketball player at Highlands about 10 years ago.

 

Between Coach Walz and Mariani, there was one year coached by Jeff Slagle (72-73). I cant find that yearbook, but his record was a good one. Beechwood was in the playoffs, which was pretty rare in those days.

 

 

It was Fred Mariani who took the Tigers to their first state championship in 1974 (lost).

 

Bernie Barre took the Tigers to their second visit to state in 1984, and Beechwood's first win.

Ok, I consulted with some of my other moldy oldie friends. Got a few more pieces of the puzzle.

 

Coach McNabb was head football coach at Beechwood from 1945-1960.

 

Gene Terry coached the 61 and 62 season seasons.

 

Dave VanDeran coached the 63 and 64 seasons.

 

1965 George Rush

 

1966-68 Tom Kramer (0-8 record) first year, dont know his total record.

 

Tom Kramer was the coach immediately before Walz whose first year was 69.

 

1969-1971 Roger Walz

 

In 1970, Roger Walz' Tigers went 7-4

 

Roger Walz was there till Jeff Slagle in 72.
