Oldham County/Walton-Verona predictions/updates

Featured Replies

Walton-Verona (4-3) travels to Oldham County to face the undefeated Colonels (6-0) in a rematch of last year's 8th Region championship.

Looking forward to seeing Carter Krohman for WV, who is averaging 9.7 ppg. Brant Smithers is having a tremendous year, averaging 17.5 ppg for first year coach Mike Hester, while shooting lights out (52.8% from the field and 91.7% at the line).

The Bearcats are lighting it up from beyond the arc; in 7 games, they've already made 66 of 163 threes for 40.5%.

Oldham County is off to a strong start, and the Colonels have been putting up the points, scoring 71 points or more in each of their six games. Oldham scored 98 versus Covington Holy Cross. The Colonels are long at all five positions, and can post up most defenders, but this is a team that, like Walton, is very talented shooting the ball. Oldham is shooting 51% from the field overall and 40% beyond arc - the Colonels have made 51 threes in 6 games.

Oldham features four starters averaging in double figures, led by Deaton Oak. Oak - the son of former Oldham star and Trimble County coach Doug Oak - averages 16.3 ppg. Perhaps one of the hottest players in the region right now, though, is junior Tyler Slone (13.5 ppg), who is averaging 17 ppg over the last three games for Oldham, including 8 of 19 beyond the arc during that time.

This should be a high-scoring affair, if both teams do what they want on offense. The key to the game will be how Walton handles the Oldham full-court and half-court pressure.

To be honest, when I scheduled this broadcast for Pegasus Sports, I wasn't really sure how attractive it was going to be. It had the "8th region championship rematch" storyline, but I wasn't sure how competive Walton-Verona was going to be this early in the season, after replacing practically all of their scoring and rebounding from last year and replacing the coach. Usuallly, that's a recipe for some uneven play in December.

But W-V has been very competitive early on, and they've proven to be a very capable club offensively. This should be a fun one. This will be a good broadcast to introduce 8th Region fans to some new names they need to learn (from both teams).

Live video coverage of this game starts at 7 pm ET on The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN

After what Anderson did to them at WV. I would expect Oldham to roll in this one.
