What happened on the Madison Southern fumble the Colonels returned for a touchdown in the 1st quarter? Instead of the touchdown, the refs gave CovCath the ball inside the 10 yard line. Inadvertent whistle?

I was standing in the end zone near the play and didn’t hear any whistle. Just a really bad call in my opinion. The QB was clearly standing nearly straight up when the ball was knocked out, however they ruled him down before the fumble. Not sure how they missed it, glad it didn’t end up impacting the outcome of the game.

Yep...that was a pretty bad missed call. I haven't seen the film, but I'm curious to know which official was calling the quarterback down before the fumble and what his perspective was on Michael Mayer play on QB Tobias Storm. And conversely, I'd like to know which offical(s) signaled a touchdown, and what their perspective was on the Mayer/Storm tackle.

 

WLWT Channel 5 also had very clear video footage of the play from their highlight reel of the game, and the fact that the quarterback was in no way down before the ball came out.

 

It looked like a touchdown from the stands. That's why I assumed it was an inadvertent whistle.
