6A Notebook: District Playoff Seeds Nearly Set.

After this week the district seeds will be set for the playoffs. Until then, there will be some pivotal district games this week. We will look at each district and see how they are shaping up for the playoffs. Weekly RPI will be provided to start thinking of those potential 3rd and 4th round playoff matchups. We will also look at the games of the week.

 

District 1:

#9 McCracken County 3-0, 10/25 at Henderson County.

Daviess County 2-1, 10/25 at Apollo

Henderson County 2-1, 10/25 vs. McCracken County

Apollo 1-2, 10/25 vs. Daviess County

Marshall County 0-4, 10/25 vs. 4A Harrison County

 

Daviess County upset Henderson County in OT 30-27 which will make things interesting this week with potential ties in the standings. Depending on the outcomes of this week’s games there could be ties for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th, which will be broke by KHSAA tie breaker rules. Marshall County at 0-4 has the #5 place locked up and will be shipped to be the District 5 #4 team for the playoffs and have a long bus ride to Louisville to play #2 Trinity.

 

District 2:

#3 North Hardin 2-0, 10/25 at #6 Central Hardin.

#6 Central Hardin 2-0, 10/25 vs. #3 North Hardin

Barren County 0-2, 10/25 at Meade County

Meade County 0-2, 10/25 vs. Barren County

 

North Hardin and Central Hardin will determine the #1 and #2 seeds and will both host 1st round playoff games. Barren County and Meade County are playing for 3rd and 4th place and both will have to travel to Hardin County to play the district powers for the 1st round of playoffs.

 

District 3:

Manual 2-0, 10/25 at #10 Butler

St. Xavier 1-1, 10/25 at Pleasure Ridge Park

Butler 1-1, 10/25 vs. #4 Manual

Pleasure Ridge Park 0-2, 10/25 vs. #5 St. Xavier

 

#4 Manual has the #1 seed locked up barring an unlikely upset by Butler. Butler with an upset of Manual would create a three-way tie. With St. Xavier taking care of an overmatched Pleasure Ridge Park, It’s highly likely Manual will host Pleasure Ridge Park and St. Xavier will host Butler for the 1st round of the playoffs.

 

District 4:

#1 Male 2-0, 10/25 vs. Bullitt East

#7 Fern Creek 1-1, 10/25 at Southern

Bullitt East 1-1, 10/25 at #1 Male

Southern 0-2, 10/25 vs. #7 Fern Creek

 

Barring any big upsets Male and Fern Creek will be #1 and #2 seeds and will host 1st round playoff games with Southern traveling down Preston Hwy to Male, and Fern Creek hosting Bullitt East.

 

District 5:

#2 Trinity 2-0, 10/25 vs. Eastern

#8 Ballard 1-1, 10/25 at 5A #3 Scott County

Eastern 0-1, 10/25 at #2 Trinity

 

This district is set, and Trinity will be hosting Marshall County out of district 1, while Ballard will host Eastern for the 1st round of playoffs.

 

District 6:

Ryle 2-0, 10/25 vs. Simon Kenton

Simon Kenton 2-0, 10/25 at Ryle

Dixie Heights 0-2, 10/25 at Campbell County

Campbell County 0-2, 10/25 vs. Dixie Heights

 

Ryle and Simon Kenton will determine the #1 and #2 seeds. Dixie Heights and Campbell County will determine the #3 and #4 seeds. Ryle and Simon Kenton will both host 1st round playoff games.

 

District 7:

Tates Creek 2-0, 10/25 vs. Henry Clay

Lafayette 1-1, 10/25 at Paul Dunbar

Paul Dunbar 1-1, 10/25 vs. Paul Dunbar

Henry Clay 0-2, 10/25 at Tates Creek

 

Tates Creek has the #1 seed locked up and Lafayette and Paul Dunbar will be playing for 2nd and 3rd seeds. Henry Clay will be #4 seed and travel to Tates Creek for the 1st round of playoff. Lafayette and Paul Dunbar will play each other in 1st round of playoff with the home team determined this week.

 

District 8:

Oldham County 2-0, 10/25 vs. George Rogers Clark

George Rogers Clark 2-0, 10/25 at Oldham County

Madison Central 0-2, 10/25 vs. Bryan Station

Bryan Station 0-2, 10/25 at Madison Central

 

Oldham County and George Rogers Clark will determine the #1 seed this week with both hosting 1st round games. Madison Central and Bryan Station are playing for the #3 and #4 seeds with both teams traveling to either Oldham County or George Rogers Clark for 1st round of playoffs.

 

Games of the Week:

#3 North Hardin (8-0) at #6 Central Hardin (8-0). This game has been circled on 6A fans calendar for a while now. North Hardin will travel to Central Hardin and play for the #1 seed in the district. There will most likely be a round two game between these two in the playoffs. Last year North Hardin defeated Central Hardin 47-7. Both teams come into this game with stingy defenses and prolific offenses. North Hardin has the #1 defense in 6A holding opponents to 8.5ppg and Central Hardin with the #5 defense holding opponents to 15ppg. Central Hardin has the #2 offense in 6A scoring 46.6ppg and North Hardin has the #4 offense scoring 38ppg. With these types of numbers, you can see this could be a close game. The best common opponent is 3A Elizabethtown who North Hardin defeated 20-13 and Central Hardin defeated 57-40. Home field advantage in playoffs and bragging rights are at stake in this game.

 

#8 Ballard (4-4) at 5A #3 Scott County (8-1). Ballard travels to play old 6A power Scott County who is now a power in 5A. This game probably means more to Scott County due to RPI implications for playoff seeding in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Ballard has played a tough schedule and played some tough teams close, so their 4-4 record is deceptive and still are a good team. Scott County has the #2 offense in 5A at 46.3ppg while their defense is #10 in 5A at 15.7ppg. Ballard has the #11 offense in 6A at 28.1 ppg while their defense is #12 in 6A at 23ppg. They have no common opponents, but Scott County did beat 6A #4 Manual 48-35. It will be tough for Ballard to stop Scott County’s very good Wing-T offense, so Scott County should win this game.

 

I have separated the RPI between districts 1-4 and 5-8 since in the third round of the playoffs the teams will be separated by these districts and then seeded., so the 1-4 district winners will be seeded, and 5-8 district winners will be seeded. Districts 1-4 are in West part of the State and 5-8 are in the East part of the State.

No. RPI cuts off at end of regular season so playoffs aren’t factored in.

Yes, the geography is good for them. I don’t think they would have much issues if in West other than Male.

Playoff opponents has no RPI impact. Set at end of regular season for 3/4 round seeding and homefield/travel advantage.

 

As far as rest of regular season, Trinity's RPI is going to take a hit because of the game with Eastern and won't be helped much (if at all by beating 5A BG) and probably hurt. However, SK has no pickup room with a win over Ryle and an out of state finishing team. Ryle has only SK left and little pickup potential there. Just too late for much improvement. Complex with thousands of game results all factoring in to final season #s .

The west has 8 of the top 10 teams in RPI, 8 of the top 10 in the Ap poll and 8 of the top 10 on the Bluegrass preps rankings. Once we get to the third round of the playoffs it's likely that all 4 teams on the west will be ranked, and only 1 in the east will be ranked.

Got to say your arguments are pretty compelling. Got to do my homework before I respond further. Just got my antiquated Male/Trinity bias and its been pretty good for a longtime.

R1 sports fan.....you are right on target. I flipped my original "take Male out of West" argument to take Trinity out of East and WOW (!) it doesn't leave much. Got to surrender to your position, with due notice the West's power is predominantly in Jefferson & Hardin Cos and in between.
