Final big win for Male playing without their leading scorer.

Boyd shot it horribly from the floor 17-68 for 25% and only 4-30 from 3 for 13.3%. Miss basketball Savannah Wheeler had 28 point but it was on 6-28 from the floor 2-10 from 3 and 14-14 from the line.

Male will now take on Barren Co. tomorrow night at 6:30 in the quarterfnals.

Boyd has been probably over ranked all year, so there was more pressure on them to do well at state than reasonable. They shot way over their average against Ryle and Highlands in Lexington and suddenly they're a top team in state. With their schedule they were not prepared for teams like Male, who even without Browning, punished them inside. Live by the 3, die by the 3.

This team went to the state semifinals last year, winning 29, won 28 this year, lost to the two state finalists in WV, beat Mercer, the defending state champs, and beat Dixie, Highlands, and Ryle (where you imply they just kept getting lucky). Kind of difficult to schedule much harder on a daily basis, as they are in the 16th and a long drive from the better teams in the state. They lost a tough game to a good team. Give em' some credit.

Sorry, don’t mean to strike a nerve. Just my opinion. I will address each of your arguments.

 

Making it deep in the state means little cause there’s no seeding.

Losing to a good out of state team certainly doesn’t mean your good.

Beating Mercer County who lost every key player and lost first round of their region absolutely means nothing. (And also Boyd had to go to overtime to beat them)

Dixie is an average team, never once ranked in top 25. And despite upsets in their regional tournament would still be considered the 4th best team in their region.

I understand that it’s hard to schedule tougher games where your located but that doesn’t change anything.

 

If Boyd loses that overtime game against Mercer County or doesn’t get “lucky” (my opinion based on shooting percentages) against Ryle and Highlands they never crack the top 10 in anyone’s rankings all season.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying Boyd was not a good team. They were a great team actually, top 25 in the state probably. But not top 10 in my opinion. I was looking forward to the LIT because it was a great chance to see where Boyd stood against the best Kentucky teams. Boyd County with Wheeler beat every single Kentucky team they played including Ryle. But why do you think every ranker in Kentucky always ranked them below Ryle and others, and not #1 or #2? I’m not the only one with this opinion. They were getting ranked in the top 5 because rankers had no reason to not rank them there because of their record. Like a non power5 school that has a great record and it’s hard to know where they fit.

 

My opinion this whole season has been that they were being over ranked. They are not big enough. Rely on 1-2 players too much. Rely on 3ball too much. Any good coach with some talent could stop them. In my opinion the Male game showed this to be true. Without their leading scorer Male handled Boyd without issue. Not even a close game. Boyd’s shooting percentage wasn’t unlucky either, it was forced by good defensive pressure on the shooters so they had to attempt more difficult shots.
