Harlan Independent has been forced to forfeit their game against Harlan County on August 23rd. Assuming Harlan County is unable to schedule a different game for that week, the game will be noted as a 1-0 forfeit in Harlan County's favor.

Finding a replacement this late in the game will be difficult for Harlan County. The only teams with open dates on August 23 are Sayre and Shawnee (not happening). Harlan County's other open date is October 11, which incidentally enough is an open date for Belfry. And while those two have played in the past, I don't expect it to occur this time around.

From what I gather Harlan County is simply going to accept the forfeit and take the free win and use it as an extra Open Week.

 

We will see if this backfires down the road or if the added week of rest and not having to play a game off the bat in the heat ends up being a blessing in disguise.

 

The Belfry game would have made a lot of sense potentially if they wanted to stiffen their schedule and also have a nice tune up right before a District game against run heavy Johnson Central.

 

I also heard they paid Harlan Independent $10,000.00 to schedule this game originally. Assuming they accept the forfeit, I wonder how the financials work out?

Feels like Harlan and Harlan County co-hosting a bowl game would have made more sense.

Absolutely and Harlan Co’s Stadium is a great venue.
