To answer original post....... no size doesn’t matter but certainly benefits. However, coaching does play a major role

Oldham County and South Oldham have won half of the region championships over this time period, and they both have had quite a bit of consistency with their coaching staffs. That is a huge benefit in building a program.

 

The size of the school and depth to choose from clearly is an asset for the region champions. A deep team can help on the court in clutch games & dealing with fatigue and foul trouble, but it also helps to practice every day against strong competition. I'm sure some of the schools in the region struggle to go 10-deep in scrimmage situations - simulating a pressing team, tough man-to-man, or a team with a lot of height.

 

The one anomaly on this list is Simon Kenton. It will be interesting to see if they start collecting region championships consistent with their enrollment.

The size of the high school means actually very little, in all honesty. You want me to pick the favorites to win the region...show me how many elementary schools they have. If they've got one, there's a good chance their "picking" their high school team in 4th or 5th grade, because they've got one team. If a kid doesn't get to play, or even gets cut...what are the odds he's going back out for the team in middle school? So, when the kid hits a growth spurt and is 6'4" by his sophomore year, you'll know why he's not playing basketball.

 

 

Any high school that has multiple elementary schools, and even better yet, multiple middle schools, that feed in to it, has a drastic advantage over others.

And let me add this one caveat to my previous post before someone jumps all over me for it. The only way having extra elementary schools (and possibly middle schools) work to your high school's benefit...is if you aren't focused on winning at all costs at the lower levels. You've got to develop kids for the long haul, not just play the same 3 or 4 kids all the time because they're heads and tails better than the rest of your group. I've seen an elementary school team score 50 points, with 44 of them coming from one kid. That's not developing.
