Living in Cleveland I know the fans love this hire. But I think they will regret letting William's walk.

I see the Williams fascination as another sign of the times. Style over everything else. A media hit.

You sound like Mike Brown here. It's all about continuity. Well we finished the season strong, so that shows this guy may be the guy. That's what led to Bruce Coslet being the Bengal's Head Coach, and then Dick Lebeau. They became the head coach because the Bengals finished seasons strong, when they took over in the middle of seasons. So the Bengals wanted to keep the positive momentum they believed they had and keeping with continuity. We all know how that worked out lol.

 

Right now is probably the most desirable the Browns may ever be. They have a young franchise QB, nice young talent on the roster, draft picks and a crap load of money to spend with the salary cap. A lot of that won't be the same 2 or 3 years from now, if Kitchens doesn't work out.

What about continuity? If the Browns hired a different coach but were able to retain Kitchens as the offensive coordinator - and the offense continued to improve next year, you'd certainly lose him to another team because he'd be a HC candidate. This makes total sense for me because Baker loved Freddie and grew with him. Now you can keep that stability in place during Mayfield's most formidable years learning how to be a pro.

 

Was Kitchens on anyone's radar for a HC position 3 months ago? Absolutely not. But the natural offensive progression the Browns made over the last half of the season was apparent. Just because this isn't a sexy hire doesn't mean it's the wrong hire. I have no clue how Kitchens will do as a head coach but I think he earned the right to be named coach.

 

If the Browns announced that Kliff Kingsbury was their new head coach, I'd be 10 times more worried than I am about this move.

Not really, @Mediocre Nachos. Context is everything. In Cincinnati you are talking about 16 years of mediocrity with no change for the sake of continuity. In Cleveland, you are talking about constant change. Everyone has said that one of the keys to turning around the franchise in Cleveland is to get some continuity and stop the carousal that has been the norm. Haslam promised continuity when he hired Hue Jackson. He wasn't able to keep that promise because Hue Jackson turned out to be so bad. In an intentional attempt to bring some continuity, Haslam probably kept Hue a year too long. He should have canned him when he fired Sashi Brown and started over with a clean slate allowing Dorsey to bring in a coach he liked. Well, now he did that, and Dorsey's choice provides a tiny bit of continuity.

 

So, don't take the mantle away from Mike Brown just yet. I little continuity is most likely a good thing in Cleveland.

I was kidding regarding @futurecoach statement because he did make a point to a degree but it's mainly from a Bengals-centric viewpoint - the kind we are all used to. @oldgrappler you hit the nail on the head with that take. That was well said and I think it sums up my thoughts as well.

You know, Cleveland still has not yet announced that Kitchens is their new Head Coach. It is odd, but apparently there are still some issues regarding the contract that they are working out.

 

I don't think it is likely the deal falls apart. Kitchens has already started naming assistants to his staff.
