14th Region Week 2 Review: Overtime Thrillers

We’re already through the second week of the high school basketball season and it’s been hot start to the 14th region so far. It’s been everything we thought that it would be so far. Let’s take a look back at the past week and see who moved where.

 

 

1) Knott County Central (3-1): The Patriots remain the top dog in the 14th after going 2-1 last week in the WYMT classic. Knott County Central opened up with the Bobcats of Bell County. The Patriots would end up winning 79-69 and advancing to the semi-finals of the mountain classic. Clay county would get the best of the Patriots on their way to a 61-57 win, advancing to the mountain classic championship game while Knott county central patriots would play for the third place game and against none other than the home town team and region foe, Perry county central. This game was one of the best games in the mountain classic. Neither team got no more than a 5-6 point lead. 4th quarter was back and forth before the Patriots pulled away late on their way to a 57-53 win.

 

The Patriots will host Hazard and Cordia this week before playing Shelby Valley in the buffalo wild wings shootout on Saturday. This should give the Patriots another big region test.

 

 

2) Hazard (5-0): The Bulldogs are on a tear and have been since the season started. 3 of their 5 games have been blowouts. Hazard didn’t have a problem coasting past Wolfe county 74-54 to open up last week. Hazard topped that with two more wins, defeating Barbourville 73-47 and Garrard county 70-66. One thing is for sure, Hazard should give Knott County Central a run for their money.

 

Hazard is slated to face two of the top three region teams this week. Hazard will welcome in crosstown rival, Perry county central on Tuesday. Hazard will make the short trip up to Hindman to take on the Knott county central patriots on Thursday before playing Floyd Central in the Buffalo wild wings shootout at Pike county central.

 

 

3)Perry County Central (2-2):The Commodores had a disappointing week last week. They opened up with Harlan county in the WYMT mountain classic and it took a 3 quarter shot to come out on top 47-46, however that would be Perry County Central’s only win last week as they would fall in their next two games 69-58 to Clay county and a hear breaker to Knott County Central 57-53.

 

That was last week tho and this week doesn’t get any easier as the Commodores will have two big road district games this week at Hazard and at Leslie county before returning home and hosting Sheldon Clark on Saturday.

 

 

4) Breathitt County (3-2): The Bobcats picked up two solid wins last week defeating district rival, Jackson city fairly easy 91-44 and winning an overtime thriller over Letcher County Central 72-68. The bobcats seem to be played better last week than they did the opening week.

 

Breathitt County only has one game on the schedule next week hosting district foe, Wolfe county.

 

5) Letcher County Central (3-1): The cougars went 2-1 last week picking up wins over June Buchanan 78-48 and Oneida baptist institute 73-57 but dropping a hear breaker to the Breathitt County bobcats 72-68 in overtime.

 

The cougars will be away from the den most of this week as they will be on the road at Jenkins and against Magoffin county in the Buffalo wild wings shootout at Pike County Central. Their lone home game will come against the pirates of Belfry.

 

 

6) Cordia (1-4): Cordia picked up their first win on the season last week, defeating Pairist school 67-63. Cordia did play that game without their two leading scorers, Darryen Pringle and Kalil Harris. The Lions would return to action the verynext night, playing South Laurel in the PRTC classic at Jackson County. This game went the complete opposite of the lions hopes as they took it square on the chin in an 102-74 loss.

 

 

The real test for the lions will be this week as they travel to Hindman to take on the Knott county central patriots and then playing George Washington WV in the Buffalo wild wings shootout.

 

 

7) Buckhorn (4-1): A team that struggled last season is off to a fast start this season winning 4 of their first 5 games. The Wildcats won all three of their games last week in blowout fashion defeating Lee county 87-50, Red Bird 81-55 and Wolfe county 74-54.

 

Buckhorn will have some tough tests this week on the road at both Rowan county and Pike county central.

 

 

8) Estill County (1-4): The Engineers picked up their first win on the season last wee kdefeating Rockcastle County 49-47 in a thriller. Estill County would lose their next two games however, losing 62-53 to Whitley county in the PRTC classic at Jackson county and a blowout loss to Rowan County 50-28.

 

Estill County doesn’t play again until next Friday when they take to the road at Powell County in a huge district showdown.

 

 

9) Leslie County (1-3): Leslie County has had a hard time getting going, being blown out in all three of their losses including last week’s blow-out losses to Harlan county 69-48 and North Laurel 76-57. Even though the season just started, the eagles need to get things fixed and fixed fast or it could be this way the whole season.

 

Leslie County will host district foe, Perry county central this week as well as being on the road to Harlan independent.

 

10) Wolfe County (1-3): Wolfe county, who won a lot of games last season, is struggling to get things going this season. Wolfe County took two blowout losses last week, the ironic part? Both games were 1 point off from being the same exact score. Wolfe dropped a 74-54 contest to the Hazard Bulldogs. They turned around and dropped a 75-54 contest to a team that only won 9 games last season, Buckhorn.

 

Wolfe County will look to get on the winning side of things this week but the difficult part is, they have two district games against Jackson City and Breathitt County.

 

 

11) Powell County (0-4): The Pirates are looking to get win #1 this season but so far it’s came with a price and they’ve not been able to get the price is right. The good news is, Powell County has three chances this week to get win #1 under their belt. Paintsville, Lee County and Estill County all on the schedule for the upcoming season.

 

 

12) Jackson City (2-4): Every game for the Tigers this season, both wins and losses, have been blowouts. Can Jackson City come up with a close game, either way this week?

 

13) June Buchanan (2-3): Thecrusaders have already won two games this season and we’re not even halfway through December. This year looks promising for coach Smith and the crusaders.

 

14) Owsley County (1-2): The Owls have lots of questions with no answers so far this season. They need to get things fixed before district games start getting played or it could be a very long year for the owls.

 

15) Lee County (2-5): The bobcats have won a game for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

 

16) Riverside Christian (0-0): Still no games listed for the rams this season. What’s going on?

10 Wolfe Co

 

I’ve seen Hazard and Knott Co. Central both play. If it wasn’t so far away Friday I would love to watch those two physical teams play. Also, both teams have quality guard. Pelfry will be special.
