John Hardin 14 Nelson Co. 13

Nelson Co. missed a long field goal at the end of regulation.

Wow, close game, I had NC winning by a point. Congrats Cards on a much improved season and good luck next year.

Congrats to the Cards, they played well. John Hardin looked good defensively the first half. The second half was a different story. Nelson physically whipped John up front. John's offense is still struggling. They'll have to play better in order to win next week.

Good job Nelson. Set aside from the game the powers at hands here in Nelson need to take a look at some of the coaching staff to see who is still be influenced by "whiney" parents.

This isn't the place for that. Bruner is not influenced and that is what matters. This is a game thread.

This game was as fine a game as there was in the state, and tragic for Nelson, who should have won this game.

First half, JH dominated. 7 of JH's 8 first-half drives started in Nelson territory. Nelson offense had no first downs and just 22 net yards. Defense kept them in it, though. Brandon Williams #40 kept coming up with stop after stop after stop. He was phenomenal. Only 14-0 at half.

Second half, different story. JH 3 and out on first drive. Punt, Nelson County drives it down 75 yards and puts it in. 14-7. Nelson kicks off, pooch kick, JH fumbles it, Nelson recovers. Nelson drives it 52 yards, puts it in, but miss the extra point. 14-13 JH, but Nelson has eaten up most of 3rd quarter.

4th quarter, JH offense moves it some, but stalls. Punt. Ball downed at Nelson 10 with 7:45 to play. They drive all the way down to the JH 6 yard-line, but with 3:30 to go miss a 23 yard field goal try. Miraculously, the defense stops JH again and force them to punt. Nelson gets it at their own 20 with 1:30 to go. PASS it down to the JH 32. With 8 seconds to play, Nelson misses a 49 yard field goal try.

Let me say this about Nick Smith, Nelson's kicker. He was obviously disconsolate after the game. However, he has the strongest leg of any Nelson kicker in 10 years. He routinely kicks kickoffs out of the end zone. Nelson will not have another kicker like him for many years. He is a great kid. His career should be remembered on the whole, not just for this game. I know his teammates will do that.

Bart Bruner has laid a great foundation. They have the entire backfield and half the line back. The defense suffers grievous losses and have to regroup. They line up with Bardstown in Week #1. I guarantee you a future Nelson County team will look back on this one and point to what began here this year.

They should be proud of their season.

Before you flame on me.. I didn't say Bruner at al.. I said coaching staff.. I don't want to start naming coaches. But there was a kid that had a great game last week and after the game the father of a different kid was upset that his kid didn't play and guess what his kid played all game tonight..

We will NOT get into that in THIS thread. Especially not after the inspiring performance by the Cards in the second half tonight. This is a game thread. Nelson County suffered a tragic loss and doesn't need it compounded right now with talk about politics and coaches, etc.

Then I will start my own theard at a better time.

I said Nelson County needed to cut back on the turnovers and big plays to win. They did that and they shouldve won, but thats sports for ya.

I couldnt be more proud of my friends, they played their hearts out. They couldve quit at 14-0 but they had the heart of champions.

To John Hardin, good luck next week.

Amen.

The kids dont deserve that

Also, Jordan Keene was a man in the 2nd half. He stepped up and put his team on his shoulders and nearly lead them to the major upset.

Keene was unreal. The unsung hereo of the ballgame for JH was #24 on defense, he kept D'Sean Patterson from making several long runs for TD's, including one in the open field late in the game that would have won it for Nelson.

I also though in the 4th quarter Devin Boone, playing on only one leg, showed a lot of heart.

I hate to see nelson lose such a close game i was rooting for them.

Great job. Bruner is the real deal and will put Nelson back on top.

Although Nelson's season wouldn't have been deemed successful by some, it made huge strides from last year's 1-9 team. Nelson has a new attitude and it will carry them into the future. I forsee an excellent game between them and bardstown in week one '07.
