My daughter plays basketball for a Northern Ky High School team. She is now in her Junior year and has been playing Varsity for 4 years. She is a player that most teams would love to have on their team. As a Sophomore she was All-District, HM All-Region, HM Cin. Enquirer All-star team. Top 15 in NKy. in PPG and rpg. I bring this up because recently there was a coaching change and I asked my daughter if she would like to play for BC. We had been asked by a couple of parents on BC to consider. In addition, my wife also took classes with Nell at NKU. My point is, I believe Nell gets a bad rap when people talk about recruiting to BC. I think Nell would have loved to have my daughter play for her but it NEVER came up in conversations with her, by either party. As a matter of fact, Nell did the classiest thing I have ever seen and told us that our new coach will do a wonderful job for our daughter. To date the new coach has done that wonderful job with her and I see her growing as a player and person on a daily basis. By the way, my daughter told me she had no intentions of transfering school she was playing with her friends of many years, no matter what the outcome.

 

I do have a question though, once Nell retires, where will all of the talent transfer to next?

 

Nell doesn't have to recruit but isn't it considered recruiting if anyone associated with that school ask you to consider sending your child to that school. Just asking... Sounds as if your daughter has her priorities strait and will make a great coach if she chooses to go into the profession. Good luck on the upcoming season.

I understand the transfer thing because we all want our daughters/sons to have the best opportunities they can have. I know my daughter will be playing at the next level, but that might not necessarily be true for some others without some solid coaching, high visibility, etc.... In addition I am all about fair. What about the 5 girls that have been playing in the Boone County School System that were displaced by the 5 that transfered in recently. Do they have to transfer to play ball? They may be better than the 6 - 10 man on most teams but can't play for Boone. I think that for the most part there are some very good High School coaches that can do well by some of these girls that transfer to BC, I think that sometimes they just need to give them (the coaches) a chance. My daughter , if nothing else, has taught me that sometimes the talent pool is a little thin, but transferring to a school just to win is overrated. She is helping to build a program with her talent and skills. After Varsity practice, she goes back for another 2 hours and works with the freshmen. In my mind this is the mark of a true winner and she will surely be noticed for her efforts.

I don't know where you are getting 5 transfers from. Our Sophomore guard came in her Freshman year if you call that a transfer. Then you have Behrens who did transfer this year. As of right now the starting 5 from last year minus one graduate will be the starters this year.

I don't blame Nell Fookes at all. Great coach.. I blame parents entirely.. You know in not a single one of these threads on topics like this do I see where the kid transfered because they thought he/she would get a better education.. It is all about sports and that dear parents is what is wrong with high school athletics these days..

the reason for your move was academics, it will not be approved.

The student would then have to sit out 1 calender year.

If you think this is not the case, ask the 2 girls who left Conner

to go to Highlands. They moved to FT.Thomas from Boone County

and they were still denied.

Family moved to Ft. Thomas and yes they moved for Academics as I am sure InDaZone will tell you..... but they were refused. Edmondson (from Holmes)tried to play at Gallantin County but he was refused, and he had a great reason for not wanting to go to Holmes. How come a young lady whose family still has their home up for sale in Ludlow can play while the others can't? Just wondering what is going on with the KHSAA......and I am not knocking the young lady going to Boone at all.....

It also depends on the scout/recruiter that you spoke with. The input I received was "if the current situation is not right for your child and if you have the means/resources available then put your son/daughter in the best possible place to be developed for success in and out of the classroom, but above all, she must be happy in order to reach her full potential in both areas".

 

I would agree that the child needs to be happy but most kids are happy when they are at a school they have attended for a number of years and had the same group of friends in the their local community. It seems to me that more times then not its mom and dad who are the ones who are unhappy and start speaking for their kids and saying they are unhappy. Can't say I have ever heard a kid say I'm unhappy at school A and want to go to school B unless they have been coached to say such a thing..Again it is only a matter of time before parents ruin high school sports much the way they are ruining youth sports..IMO..

Did they sell their house in Boone County? The KHSAA is a little sensitive to Boone County folks moving to Ft Thomas WITHOUT actually selling their home.

For what its worth, yes I have played and coached sports and have stayed very involved with high school, middle school and elementary sports.

And OldGuy does bring up just one fact and it is a very valid fact and for the number of people who have seen this situation unfold over the past 4-5 years the fact remains that this entire situation has been a joke to say the least and it only makes the KHSAA look foolish at their total lack of investigative work on this situation and many others. Their decisions are entirely random and more times then not will favor the bigger more affluent schools (Public and Private)and schools like Gallatin Cty come out on the short end of the stick.

As to your last comment regarding the clearing of a gym at elementary school athletic events, I find this behavior reprehensible and parents who stoop to this type of behavior should be arrested and permanantly banned from all future athletic events.

I wouldn't consider Sam Bowling in this conversation, nor Jacy Bradley as they both came in as Freshman. Throw those two out and who is left in the equation. Only one, Katie, this yr. So, if you are going back to Sam there has been only one transfer in after the freshman yr. If there are others as you state, who are they. Due to the old rules of transferring the two mentioned would not be considered transfers, IMO. If you go on were they playing V where they came from, then yes, they would be considered transfers since they both had played V at their previous schools.

 

I don't know if I agree w/314/oldguy about all schools aren't treated the same, that would be illegal. Why do you think this to be so? I will agree that some schools around the state(Highlands, LexCath) are probably under a very magnified microscope when any transfer papers come across the desk due to past problems. If all the paper work is in order and done by the book these students should be declared eligible. If they are not, then there had to be something done wrong.

I might be wrong but I was just told that these two Conner girls going to Highlands are cleared to play so you might want to check your informant. My source is very reliable, IMO.

 

I just confirmed my previous statement w/a Highlands parent of a girls bball player. They have both been ruled OK. Sad for the youngest since she was a good soccer player, so I've been told, and missed the season.

 

Shame on the KHSAA for dragging their feet as they tend to do often.

Yes, the Highlands girls were ruled eligible, thank God.

 

The Bylaw clearly reads “academic purposes will not be accepted” for eligibility. So, IF the reason for the move was not documented "for academic purposes" in the beginning it perhaps may have been different, who knows. It took a while to change the eligibility decision because that's when the board was scheduled to have their meeting.

 

If Behrens would have played volleyball or soccer she "may" have also been ruled ineligible because it took nearly 3 months to review her paperwork as well, but we'll never know. Katie's eligibility was approved on a Tuesday and the Highlands girls 3 days later. My goodness folks.

For the purposes of this particular forum they are "ALL" eligible to play Bball and go to school. If the concern is about the eligibility ruling for Soccer then may I suggest taking it to the soccer forum?

Bowling is a Junior this year and has been playing since she was a freshman. Bradley is a Sophomore and has been playing since her Freshman year, and now there is Behrens who is a Junior. That makes 2 maybes if you want to get technical and 1 for sure in the last 3 years. About displacing a player on the bubble no one was cut to make room for these players. As it turned out last year Boone finished with only 14 players for Varsity and JV. Nell normally keeps 17 or 18

Since I started this thread titled "transfers" how come no one has mentioned any girls that have went to NDA and only Boone?

 

Let's hear about the NDA transfers and I will get it started w/one, Jones!
