BluegrassPreps 2018 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 5 Edition

Concerning the top story line for this week, ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!! I don’t think I recall a week of doing these rankings (this is the 4th year) where all top 8 teams were all on the road in the SAME week. I understand for every game there is usually a home and a visiting team, but don’t recall that many road warriors at the top of our ranking! We have some shake up for sure in the lower 5 this week! Let’s find out how they did last week!

Popcorn N Coke Top 10 Version – Week 5:

1. Bowling Green 5A (5-0): Win 50-6 at 4A Warren Central

2. South Warren 5A (5-0): Win 41-7 at 5A Grayson County

3. Mayfield 2A (5-0): Win 56-21 at 5A Graves County

4. Franklin Simpson 4A (4-1): Win 17-14 at 6A Meade County

5. Logan County 4A (5-0): Win 40-20 at 2A McLean County

6. Owensboro Catholic (3-2): Win 33-30 at 5A Apollo

7. Glasgow 2A (5-0): Win 56-40 vs 4A Warren East

8. Paducah Tilghman 3A (4-1): Win 41-13 vs 4A Hopkinsville

9. Owensboro 6A (3-2): Win 42-14 at 5A Owensboro

10. Caldwell County 6A (3-2): Win 34-14 vs 6A Henderson County

Week 5 Western Kentucky Game of the Week: 4A Warren East (2-3) 40 at 2A Glasgow (5-0) 56 4 points shy of 100 between the teams and 31 yards shy of a combined 1,000 yards of offense in this one makes all defensive coordinators cringe at the thought of it! Glasgow ran the ball with great success and forced 3 key turnovers. But this was a tight game at 14-13 Scotties at the end of 1 and 28-27 at the half. Warren East took the lead at 33-28 midway through the 3rd! But the Scotties unleased 28 straight points to put the game out of reach in the 4th Quarter!

Week 6 Western Kentucky Game of the Week: The Mayfield v Corbin game is more important to the state, but in the West, I would argue the clear game of the week that has the district on the line is:

3A Caldwell County (3-2) at 3A Paducah Tilghman (4-1): These teams have played the last 3 regular seasons as district mates, but before that if they played it would have been before 1998. In those 3 games, Caldwell County has won each of them, but the closest was last year in Princeton 24-21 Tigers! It looks like no time like the present for the Blue Tornados to reverse that trend! But can they do it? You tell me…

Honorable Mention: - Corbin vs Mayfield; Union County at Crittenden County; McCracken County at Daviess County; Glasgow at Franklin Simpson; Apollo at Graves County; and Russellville at Murray - Try to make it out to one of these great games!

Week 5 Top 10:

10) Caldwell County (3A) – PR: 10; LW: 12 - 2018 Record (3-2): Week 5 Results: Win 34-14 vs 6A Henderson County (3-2). I thought the Tigers fought hard in this one and overcame some early resistance to set the tone late and outlasted road-weary Henderson County! Trel Riley was back on the field for the Tigers and immediately contributed with an INT. QB Joby Jaggers played hard with 217 passing yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. But it was likely the Caldwell Defense that really put Henderson County behind the 8 Ball. They had 7 sacks on the night!!!! WOW! Big deal momentum into what is likely the most important game of the year next week! Week 6 WESTERN KENTUCKY GAME OF THE WEEK & DISTRICT BUTSTER: At 3A Paducah Tilghman (4-1). Caldwell has had a very tough opening schedule to the season! They have taken some lumps along the way. Part of the payment for getting better vs good teams is injuries. Hopefully the Tigers will be at 100% for this one. Good Luck Tigers!

9) Owensboro (5A) – PR: 4; LW: 11 - 2018 Record 3-2; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Win: 42-14 vs 6A County Rival Daviess County (3-2). The EMOTION Train finally ends for the Red Devils after playing OCATH, BG and now Daviess County in back to back to back weeks! I’m sure they are thankful to get their BYE Week next week! As our good friend @ApolloFan98 reported, this was an emotional game for Owensboro after the loss to Daviess last year and all the talk this year of how good Daviess County was going to be. Well after rolling up nearly 600 yards on offense and holding a (somewhat) depleted Panther offense to only 2 scores is encouraging for all Red Devil fans! Imonte Owsley played very well but I don’t have stats for this one! Week 6: BYE Week. Awesome! You are likely in need of a breather before you make the bus trip down to Christian County for the pivotal clash with the Colonels in District swinging game! Good luck Red Devils!

8) Paducah Tilghman (3A) – Preseason Rank (PR): 18; Last Week (LW): 10 - 2018 Record 4-1: Week 5 Results: Win 41-7 vs 4A Hopkinsville (1-4). Thanks to our good friend @TilghmanPride who reported on this one! Tilghman set the tone early with some long runs and a few big passes. Hopkinsville had WAY too many mistakes to be able to keep it close against a good team like Tilghman! Only problem was 2 significant Tilghman players “may” have been injured. Will they be around for the BIG District battle next week? You tell me… Week 6 WESTERN KENTUCKY GAME OF THE WEEK & District Buster: vs 3A Caldwell County (3-2). This should be a super game! Caldwell has owned this series the past 3 years, but I think it’s safe to say that this will be the best of the 4 Tilghman teams to play Caldwell County. With that being said, I know Caldwell has a very good pass defense, but not sure of the run defense. The Blue Tornados will surely test that! Then can the Tilghman D come up with big stops against a very solid Caldwell County offense that is going to pass the ball? We shall see…

7) Glasgow (2A) – PR: 12; LW: 11 - 2018 Record (5-0): Week 5 Results WESTERN KENTUCKY GAME OF THE WEEK Win 37-0 vs 4A Warren East (2-3): This is only the second time in nearly 20 years that Glasgow has started the season at 5 and 0! That’s a big deal! Week 6 at 4A Franklin Simpson (4-1). This is a great old rivalry! Franklin has had the best of it in the recent past winning last season. The series was dormant from 2011 to 2016. Glasgow last beat Franklin back in 2007 when Billy Lindsey (now BG assistant coach) was Head Coach for the Scotties! But all the scores are generally 30 to 14 kind of scores. I look for something like this again. And with this being the first Scottie road game of the year, I don’t think Shadetree Stadium will be all that receptive for a visiting win. But I do think it could be tight for a while!

6) Owensboro Catholic (2A) – PR: 13; LW: 8; 2018 Record 3-2: Week 5 Results: Win 33-30 vs 5A Apollo (4-1). What a game sports fans! Maybe one of the best in the State last week. OCath generally dictated the scoring but give Apollo credit as they kept coming back until the end! QB Drew Hartz played well along with RB Von Williams (you will see his numbers later)! But the OCath defense certainly help the Aces turn the momentum tide by coming up with 2 INT, 2 fumble recoveries and 5 sacks on the night! Great Job! Week 6 at 2A District Mate Butler County (0-5). The Aces head to Butler County to take on the winless Bears! Even when the great Rex Henderson was a Senior, the Bears couldn’t take down the Aces even in Morgantown! King Rex ain’t walkin through that door! Aces Roll!!!

5) Logan County (4A) – PR: 8; LW: 7 - 2018 Record 5-0; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Win: 40-20 vs 2A McLean County (3-2). Logan County rolled up about 500 yards on the night and held McLean under 300 so pretty efficient work by the defense and offense! RB Gary Hardy continues to do a great job for the Cougars rushing for just over 200 yards and a TD on the night! Week 6: vs District Mate 4A Hopkins County Central (3-2). This used to be a powder puff game until Coach Adler and crew came to the Land of Fred Tisdale (of WKU Basketball Fame for those of you old enough to remember those great WKU Teams)! But this is a different animal now; Logan County has realistic aspirations to make a run at winning their district again and competing with Franklin Simpson for the right to advance towards a State Championship Game in Lexington! That march and the march to win the District starts here!!!

4) Franklin Simpson (4A) – PR: 5; LW: 4 - 2018 Record 4-1; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Win: 17-14 at 6A Meade County (2-3). According to our good friends @FSfan and @macdon, the Wildcats were in great shape entering the 4th quarter with a 17-0 lead and relatively all the momentum. But a couple untimely penalties and Franklin and Meade ditching the Wing T for a Spread had the Green Wave with 3 points late in the game. Then a gut check time-chewing drive highlighted by Star RB Carlos McKinney’s 6 straight runs allowed the Wildcats to take a knee and end the game at the Meade 8. Congratulations for Wildcats kicker Collin Hollingsworth for earning the Wildcats last 3 points. The Sophomore atoned for not being able to even the game late last season. A really tough spot to put any Freshman in. Congrats Collin! Week 6: vs 2A Glasgow (5-0) at 7pm. I’m hoping our good friend @macdon will chime in with some old school history info for these old rivals! But we definitely have 2 of our better teams in the West playing at Shadetree Stadium next Friday Night! I just look for the Wildcats to have too many weapons and their talented OLine to be able to wear down the Scotties in the second half of this game! But it should be close for a good while in this one!!!

3) Mayfield (2A) – PR: 3; LW: 3 - 2018 Record 5-0; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Win: 56-21 at 5A Graves County (1-4). I just get the feel that Mayfield is generally playing Trivial Pursuit and each year just goes around the Purchase Area gathering colored tokens to place in their pie game piece with the intent to heading toward the center of the board every year looking to win the State Championship! Well you earned the Blue Eagle game piece this week Cardinal Fans! Although Graves did hang in there early in the game, which I give them credit for! Just too many weapons for the Cardinals! Week 6: vs Stout 2A Corbin (4-0). The Redhounds are a little bit different animal than you’re used to playing. They are obviously a very good team. Last season, I don’t think the Cards got a lot of calls in the game and pulled a couple questionable tactics to squeak out a 20-17 win at a game played at Austin Peay University! I think this game is more important than last year. I think Mayfield knows that in order to defeat the 2A Big Boys of Jefferson County that they need to be at their best. Winning this game will make sure that ball is going in the right direction! Good luck Cardinals!

2) South Warren (5A) – PR: 2; LW: 2 - 2018 Record 5-0; [District Record 1-0] Week 5: Win: 41-7 at 5A Grayson County (4-1). The Spartans kick off District play with another impressive win and hand the Cougars of Grayson County their first loss of the season. Although I do think this is a pretty good Greyson County team, when you can not get out of the shadow of your own goal to start drives against South Warren, you are in trouble. They put you in the spin cycle and just don’t let you out of it. South gets to the running clock and then puts it in cruise control again! Week 6: vs Rocky Mountain (Fort Collins), Colorado (1-3). I have to admit that I am scratching my head a bit here. I realize South Warren is trying to replace the now District departing Barren County Trojans, but to select a team 1,200 miles away, who is 1 and 3 on the year; who is roughly 7,700 spots below you on a national level (MaxPreps) is mind-boggling to me. I’m sure there is a reason of someone knows someone. But doesn’t someone know someone in Nashville or Louisville or Cincinnati? Just seems odd to me…

1) Bowling Green (5A) – PR: 1; LW: 1 - 2018 Record 5-0; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Win: 50-6 at 4A Warren Central (0-5). The Dragons have a very nice brand new home field. I hope they get a win there in the future, but when they do it will not be against the Purples. I continue to think now more than ever that playing on the varsity level is not in the best interest of either team. We will see how it plays out. Week 6: vs District Mate 5A Greenwood (2-3). I don’t think this game will be very entertaining. EXCEPT for the fact it will be my 30 Year Reunion! Will be fun reacquainting with my old class-mates! I plan to pay much more attention to catching up with old friends that taking in the critical plays of this lop-sided affair. Maybe next year Gators!!!

Next 10 – 11 to 20:

11) Daviess County (6A) – PR: 7; LW: 5 - 2018 Record 3-2; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: Loss: 42-14 vs 5A Owensboro (3-2). The Panthers were without key weapon Blake Baker! And got overwhelmed by a determined Red Devil team that wanted to atone for a loss to Daviess that they had had to listen to for a whole year! The Daviess County defense got exposed giving up nearly 600 yards in the game! No time to feel sorry for yourself now Panthers – Let’s Move On! Week 6: District Buster vs 6A District Rival McCracken County (1-4). McCracken County comes into this season as the defending District Champions, but after Daviess County went on the road last playoff season and knocked off the Mustangs it’s been downhill for them ever sense. Now the Mustangs make the sizeable trip over to Owensboro to take on a primed and ready Panther squad that has taken aim at a District Title for themselves. The Panthers send out a message to the rest of the district with this game! You heard it here first!!!

12) Union County (3A) – PR: 19; LW: 13 - (2018 Record 3-0) Week 5 Results: Win 59-14 at 2A Ballard Memorial (1-3). I don’t have any stats on this one, but doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the Union County offense was scoring early and often! Looks like the Bomber got bombed! Week 6: at 1A Crittenden County (3-1). Should be an excellent game over in Marion on Friday Night! Two excellent teams looking to keep momentum going into the District slate of games! Is this a pick em game? You tell me…

13) Henderson County (6A) – PR: 20; LW: 13 - (2018 Record 3-2) Week 5 Results: Loss 34-14 at 3A Caldwell County (3-2). The Colonels just hit the wall! I mean they came out and opened the game with a nice TD pass from QB Skip Patterson to WR Nick Cissel and actually led 7-0 as reported by our good friend @Razor Ramon! But then the offensive flow just really struggled! Add a critical Pick 6 just before the half and the Colonels seemed to be out of gas! I mean I can understand this playing a very good schedule out of the gate and just didn’t have enough gas to get the job done in Princeton! What do you need to recharge your vehicle Colonels? Week 6: at 6A Ohio County (0-5). You should be able to fill up with some low-hanging Ohio County Eagle fruit!!! Long, long year for the Eagles is about to get longer! Colonels roll!

14) Christian County (5A) – PR: 11; LW: 14 - 2018 Record 2-2; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Results: BYE Week. I hope you got all your injured players back to near 100% Colonels as its District time!!! Week 6: at 5A Marshall County (3-2). This game will show us where the Colonels are. If they struggle to put the Marshalls away they likely will have a very difficult night when the Red Devils drive down from Owensboro. But if they roll over Marshall County, I think it could be a very interesting game in the long district rivalry between the Colonels and Red Devils!

15) Madisonville – North Hopkins (4A) – PR: 9; LW: 17 - 2018 Record 3-2; [District Record 1-0] Week 5 Results: Win 42-6 at 4A District & County Rival Hopkins County Central (3-2). Awfully nice to get a rivalry win and a district win in the same game! Doesn’t happen often! The Maroons rolled up almost 400 yards in this one that was over nearly as soon as it started. Star RB Juriah Hightower was really good in this one. You will see his numbers later! Week 6: vs 4A District Mate Calloway County (1-3) The Lakers have played pretty well this season with the only exception being overpowered by 2A Murray the opening game of the season. But I fear this will be another level for the Lakers that they won’t be able to handle. The Maroons seem to have stabilized things and if that’s the case, I fear a very long night against a solid Madisonville squad!

16) Apollo (5A) – PR: 16; LW: 15 - (2018 Record 4-1): Week 5 Results: Loss 33-30 vs 2A Owensboro Catholic (3-2). I don’t have any stats for the Eagles, but think their “Never Quit” meter was running high last week. Just came up short against a hot Aces club! Time to move on Eagles! Week 6 at District Mate Graves County (1-4). Should be a very tough game for the Eagles! Why would you say that Purple88, as Graves County only has 1 win on the year? Well, it’s about a 3 hour bus trip over to Graves from Owensboro. I don’t care who you are – that makes a difference. Graves hasn’t played great this year – true, but they always seem to come out and punch somebody in the mouth and see what happens. If you don’t punch back, they will be in this game. It’s a home district opener and you better believe it will be a tough physical game! Good luck Eagles!

17) Crittenden County (1A) – PR: 17; LW: 18 (2018 Record 3-1) Week 5 Results: Win: 48-13 vs 2A Poor Ole’ Webster County (1-4) The Rockets got off to a slow start on Homecoming Night by giving the Trojans a couple turnovers and poor special teams play, but they rallied with quick strikes before the half to take a 28-0 lead into half time and never looked back! Several Rockets play well, but you will have to keep going to see! Week 6: vs 3A Stout Union County (4-0). This is a dandy of a game that most people will never know about! Both teams have a lot of momentum right now and really good offenses. I think the team whose defense comes out making plays will win this game! Good luck Rockets!

18) Hopkinsville (4A) – PR: 6; LW: 16 - 2018 Record 1-4; [District Record 0-0] Week 5 Result: Loss 47-13 at 3A Paducah Tilghman (4-1). I thought the Tigers came out and played very hard in this game, but penalties and turnovers are not the recipe for getting a tough road win when you commit them! It is just going to take some time Tiger fans to move forward without Jay Bland at QB! Plain and simple. Week 6: BYE Week. This is a great time for a BYE for the Tigers! They have been given a cruel hand of fate via injuries! So this will allow the coaching staff and players the opportunity to regroup and re-strategize!

19) Warren East (4A) – PR: 23; LW: 19 - (2018 Record 2-3) Week 5 Results – Loss 56-40 at 2A Glasgow (5-0). The Raiders were in this game! Star RB Thomas Maxey played really well rushing for 250 yards and 3 TDs. Raider QB Nolan Ford also played well passing for almost 200 yards and 3 scores! Probably just need to focus on tightening up the defense now Raiders! Keep going!!! Week 6: vs Gritty 2A Monroe County (1-4). I look for the Raiders to get back on their winning ways next Friday night! Could it be a running clock? You tell me…

20) McLean County (2A) – PR: NR; LW: 20 - 2018 Record 3-2: Week 5 Results: Loss 40-20 vs 4A Logan County (5-0). McLean County rolled up over 250 yards on Logan County and scored more than any team has scored on Logan County this year. Hey that’s something! And it’s important to shake that one off quick as after the BYE week next week you travel to Owensboro to take on the RED HOT Aces in a District clash!!! Good luck Cougars!

Others Receiving Votes: McCracken County, Graves County, Allen County Scottsville, Russellville, Grayson County, Hancock County, and Fulton County!!!

WEEK 5 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Trevor Dyer – RB/LB – Breckinridge County – rushed 44 times for 254 yards and 5 TDs – I’m not done! He led the team with 15 tackles and 1 INT! WOW! Congratulations Trevor!

AND

Caleb Kimble – RB – Fulton County – rushed for 239 yards and 4 TDs vs S Fulton TN! Congratulations Caleb!

Other outstanding performances in the West:

1) Nick Mitchell – RB – Glasgow – 226 yards and 5 TD vs Warren East!

2) Von Williams – RB – Owensboro Catholic – 239 yards and 2 TDs vs Apollo!

3) Juriah Hightower – RB – Madisonville – 200 yards and 4 TDs vs Hopkins County Central!

4) Lincoln Sisk – WR – Union County – 4 TDs vs Webster County!

* If there are stats I don’t know about, please add them below!

Week 5 “Teams Trending Down”

Daviess County (6A) – Down – Hard to win when you don’t have all your weapons with you and play in a place as tough to play as Rash Stadium is, BUT… This was an opportunity I feel the Panthers let slip by. It is rare that you “may” have been considered the favorite going into a game against Owensboro. So you need to take advantage of those opportunities. Back to focus on the District slate now Panthers!

Henderson County (6A) – Down – The see-saw now goes down for the Colonels, who just couldn’t go to the well again and pull it out against tough Caldwell County! Gotta do what your district mate above is doing… Put this one behind you and focus on the district slate of games!

Teams “Trending Up”

Fulton County (6A) – Up – Is there anything this season that is more heartwarming than the Fulton County Pilots story!!! This is a team with a LONG losing streak not that long ago. Program left as a ghost-town! But Coach James Bridges has his group of 24 young men pointed in the right direction. They blitz South Fulton, TN 62-16 in an ole fashioned wood shed job! JR RB Caleb Kimble is running wild and next week is another game the Pilots can clearly compete in! Let’s Go Pilots!!!!!

Caldwell County (3A) – Up – This team has grit! Good 6A squad comes into town and puts up 7 quick! But the Tigers regroup to score 34 straight! Solid! Set’s up a fantastic game in Paducah! Get over there Tiger fans and support your team!

WESTERN KENTUCKY – TEAM SPOTLIGHTS -

Breckinridge County – The Fighting Tigers didn’t win 1 game last season. That’s tough my friends… They stopped a game Todd County squad in Week 1 in a Barn-burner 15-8! Last week they battled tooth and nail with Ohio County and just came out on top 36-34 in a great game I’m not sure many saw or know about. When I saw the stats for SR RB/LB Trevor Dyer, I was pretty much speechless (and that’s doing something!) – 44 attempts (are you kidding me – talk about riding your best player) for 254 yards and 5 TDs!!! But that was only as a running back! He also led the team with 15 tackles and made 1 INT! I’m still waiting to hear if he sold popcorn too!!! Simply outstanding! It is efforts like this that make high school football the great game it is!!!

Crittenden County - SR QB Hunter Boone now has over 400 career completions at Crittenden County! This guarentee's Hunter will be in the Top 50 QBs all time in KY history for Pass Completions for a career! Congratulations Hunter!

His prime target - SR WR Ethan Dossett with his 2 TD catches on Friday night break the all time Crittenden County scoring reception mark of 18 TDs for his career in Marion! Congrats Ethan!

Good work 88! 30 years since High School? Dude... you’re old!!

A few teams is getting ready to have their squads tested in a couple of weeks or so. Going to get interesting...

Thanks Rosco!

This is pretty informative in what happened in the game.

Whenever your QB throws for 100 more yards and has 2 more TDs and 1 less INT you are generally going to win the game!

Franklin-Simpson’s sophomore kicker is Cole Hollingsworth.

Coach Preston’s son, DE/LB is Collin Preston.

P88, great work as always.

You definitely compile a lot of info in your posts!

As usual great breakdown! In the words of the late Dennis Green, "They were who we thought they were....." They didn't get off the hook. OHS is still having issues with their short yardage game. Passing on the goal line!! With less that a yard? Or short yardage for that matter. Wouldn't be a problem if: 1) they did it every once and a while, 2) if they converted once or twice, and 3) if they didn't turn the ball over when they did attempt. There was an attempt against County that if after the pick, county had converted, might have been a different game. Luckily, County didn't and Owensboro took the win. They might be ok through the district but, this won't (didn't) work against Bowling Green (as a matter of fact, it bit them in the rear) , won't work against South Warren or Covington Catholic. They will have to play 2 possibly all 3 to get to Lexington, will they not? I'm looking forward to see what happens.

Thanks for the correction Mac!

No harm meant.

Thanks for the correction Mac!

No harm meant.

Of course not. With so many teams and names those two are easy to mix up.

Great recap as usual.

74,

What is your most important key for Owensboro advancing deep into playoffs?

If the kids do their jobs. Play smart, don't try to do too much. Warren has to understand that his job is to get the ball to his play makers (and he has several) and not to play "Hero Ball". No more picks when you should throw the ball away (all he needs to do is watch the film against Catholic and Bowling Green). They can be competitive against who ever they play, they do have the fire power, but they have to realize that they can't give their opponents opportunities through turnovers and silly penalties. That will get you beat quicker than anything. They learned that hard lesson last year. One more thing, Leave the red zone shot gun in the playbook and develop an inside (short yardage) running game. Only look at the gun in the zone as a last resort. I said look, not use.

Sorry 88, I replied but neglected to quote your question.
