SHS, I agree. The varsity played very little compared to the others players. I think there might be some evaluation going on but it was disappointing with the last scrimmage before a game that the expected regulars played very little together. I don't know about you but it is hard to get a handle on how the team will hold up this year. There was some signs of good things to come in the Newport scrimmage but too much mix in the Paris scrimmage.

Mason was not drilled by Dunbar, Dunbar has an excellent team, athletic and talented. Mason Co was drilled in the first quarter 21-5, but only ended up losing by 11.

Didn't Dunbar pull off their press in the 2nd half after the press led them to drill them early?

I am glad that you agree as well. I know what the coach was trying to do, but at this point and time, I don't think it was a good idea. I know my daughter was frustrated, as I am sure that yours was as well. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeing how your younger players can do, but you also can't forget about your experienced players, they are the heart and soul of the team. I am a little nervous this year as to how things are going to go for the Girls Varsity at Scott. It is good to build for the future, but don't forget about today as well.

Whats your answer?

Haven't received one. I heard from a scout that they were drilled and the score only became respectable when Dunbar pulled off the in-your-face press and went to a more 2-2-1 set or a simple 1/2 court defense. At that point, Mason made a comeback but when Dunbar was going with their style of pressing, Mason was getting drilled.

Said Mason's lack of a bench played into it as Dunbar was running people in and out and Mason couldn't match it.

1st quarter was the difference, a 21-5 start versus a very good team is hard to recover from.

So did Dunbar either call off the press after the 1st quarter or change to a different press?

They changed presses. Getting beat by 11 is not getting drilled.

21-5 in one quarter is and from my understanding Dunbar did not press them anymore in the game like they did in that 1st quarter. They worked on that press in the first quarter and Mason could not handle it.

The Dunbar coaching staff decided to work on other things in the remaining quarters including a 1/2 court defense that Mason could handle.

I am just telling a 10th region coach that was there scouting felt they got drilled while they were scouting them. I was not in attendance.

Thanks for your comments, they changed presses, and in preseason games that is what you do is work on different things and really don't show a lot. Hands down Dunbar was the better team and have a nice team....but I think the remarks of being drilled is a little off base and extreme. Now if your beat 40-50 points then your not only overmatched in talent but then you can bring out the drilled remarks.

No shame in losing to Dunbar if they brought back much from last year's 20-7 squad, who defeated Rose Hill in early January among others.

As I've said many times, Mason must develop its bench to compete with the upper-echelon teams in Kentucky.

If Mason were beating someone 21-5 after 1 quarter, wouldnt you say their opponent was getting drilled? Most fans would.

Ah, there is Mojo and its high school basketball again....glad to have you back commenting on me and I believe if you would take the time to reread the first initial comment by OptionRight in this thread was that Mason got drilled in the game against Dunbar overall, not just one quarter. If they were beat 20, 30, 40, 50 points then I think it would be justified that they were drilled. No I wouldn't say that if it was 21-5 that a team got drilled because teams can always recover and make a game out of it, now I would say that it was a lopsided quarter and a particular team didn't come ready to play and if the game continued like the first quarter then it is what it is and yes they would have gotten drilled but that didn't happen. Nice try though my man....:sssh:

Absolutely correct and on target. I would add to give players chances to show something that they may not get during a regular season game.

Also, Dunbar may have been pressing and had two starters with 2 or 3 fouls in the first quarter but in preseason games that has no relevance cause you don't foul out but where in a regular season it plays a major part of being able to press for the entire game.
