Molly Ringwald revisits The Breakfast Club/John Hughes #MeToo

Recommended Posts

An extremely thought provoking article by Molly Ringwald that was published in The New Yorker that has Molly revisiting The Breakfast Club and commenting on other movies she was featured in that were made by John Hughes. Having seen all three movies(Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink) I felt like it was extraordinary to read her thoughts on those movies now that she is older, wiser and as our country evolves into the #MeToo Era. Molly has the delicate act of showing appreciation to the movies that established her career while also being open minded about what she called “glaring issues” in John Hughes writing. I started this article and read it from start to finish immediately. I was entranced by her thoughts and I assume others who grew up watching these movies would appreciate her thoughts I. 2018 on the movies that established her career. I thoroughly enjoyed the article.

How are we meant to feel about art that we both love and oppose? What if we are in the unusual position of having helped create it? Erasing history is a dangerous road when it comes to art—change is essential, but so, too, is remembering the past, in all of its transgression and barbarism, so that we may properly gauge how far we have come, and also how far we still need to go.

Molly must not watch a lot of today’s movies. As my wife would say, “who is the sock person that come up with this idea”.

Her movies were entertaining, part of growing up. Not much more to it.
