What is most impressive is the fact that 3 of the 4 district 8 teams have won the region multiple times in that stretch.

Region 4 is likely headed for the 17th consecutive title for the 14th District. And it probably won’t stop any time soon.

 

It likewise has had three of their teams win.

We’re well past the “see it to believe it” standard. Glasgow should’ve stopped it in 2012 and didn’t. They’ll have the talent for sure, and I wouldn’t mind seeing them get it given they haven’t won one in 41 years. But Bowling Green will remain very, very good as well.

Henderson was supposed to do it in the 2nd this year. Madisonville is supposed to in 2020... We've heard these types of situations before (just like Glasgow). But actually doing it is tough.

If Henderson hadn't lost 3 of their best players before the season started, they would have had a really good shot at ending it. Even then it's no given, CC has a nice team so they would still be a tough out. I've not seen UHA play but having one of the best players in the state never hurts.

That's my point. People always say a "group" is going to do it. But it never seems to work out. Madisonville is the next "group" that is supposed to do it. And I agree. In two years they should have a good shot. But things tend to happen.

This streak has been interesting to watch. It all started with Ryan Isom and his hot shooting in 2002 to get Stovall his first trophy. Curtis Pulley brought it home the next year for Hoptowns first trip to Rupp in almost 20 years with Terry Hayes coaching, leading to a heartbreaking Fina 4 loss to Chris Lofton. Josh Mack pulled the big upset in 2004 leading UHA to back-2-back state trips, losing in the 2005 Final 4. Marty Cline leaves after his 2 region titles

 

Keith Tandy upset UHA in district in 2006, leading to back to back Rupp trips. Scotty Hopson and Edmonson brought UHA back in 2008 with Randy McCoy leading the way. County came right back with 3 straight titles from 2009-11, led by D1 players Corey Wilford, Donovan Kates, and Mr. Basketball Anthony Hickey (2011 State Champs). County won 5 of 6 Region titles from 2006-2011.

 

Stovall leaves and Hoptown goes on a 4 year run with Tim Haworth. With stacked teams including Jordan Majors, Qualis Matlock, and Tre Edwards, Hoptown was not even challenged in the 8th during that time. CAme close to a State title game in 2013. The "superteam trend" from college/pros came to the city during that time and a few players from UHA/CCHS came and played at Hoptown. Frankie Smith came in and ran through the region in 2016 with a team of Tyrik Edwards, Sebree, and Ware. Hoptown came right back with Cager and Johnson last season to take home Haworth's 5th title in 6 seasons.

 

Tonight is UHA's first R2 title game appearance since 2008. Hoptown and County have both accounted from 9 straight region titles and County winning tonight makes it 10 straight.

 

I still think of all the teams that should have gotten it done, but it just did not happen.

 

I think the biggest part of the streak happened at the end of the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Madisonville had Jon Hood and could have won both of those years. Jon Hood got hurt and did not get to play in Region his Junior or Senior season. We were robbed of seeing Scotty Hopson and Jon Hood in a region title, which would have been legendary. They had a really good team in 2012 and even hosted region, but Hoptown was too much. They have a group of Sophs that they are hyping up and an 8th grader who is highly regarded, but you never know.

 

Henderson has had its chances through the years. In 2004 and 2005 had teams that could have won it going into the region, got embarrassed in 2004 and lost on a Josh Mack jumper in 2005 that broke a lot of hearts. In 2015 they had the #2 team in the state and a chance to win the whole thing at Rupp, but Hoptown took them down in a shocking semi-final upset that was a BIG win in Tim Haworth's career. This year they were returning everyone and were ready to roll against Hoptown, but 3 starters transfer in August and they really miss their chance to do it this year.

Not quite the same, but in the 8th region, the south end of the region (districts 29 and 30) have won all 12 region titles since the re-districting in 2006, with each district winning 3 titles.

 

The streak is not certain to continue this year, but is probably likely, as two D29 teams (Oldham and South Oldham) and one D30 team (Anderson County) remain among the four semi-finalists.

Great summary. Some around town think UHA is about to go on their own run. Their freshman group is described as "special" by a lot of folks. The three guard group of Crump, Bryan (grandson of former mayor Wally Bryan), and DJ Quarels (son of guard on UHA state title team) are terrific. They've played a ton this year with Crump considered a top 5 freshman in the state. They also have some other kids in that freshman group that my UHA friends are hyping. There is a young shooter who had 23 in the freshman regional title game and Amani McGee is going to be really good once he grows.

 

I've also heard they have a Hall kid in 8th grade who is outstanding and would likely have dressed on a lot of UHA teams except they actually have a full roster this year.

 

Hoptown has some decent young guys. At County, there is a TON of worry about us having nothing coming up. There is a big kid who a lot of people are excited about bu that is pretty much it.

 

We'll see how things develop. Kids can transfer easily to build a "super team" as some have discussed. But if things hold true I look for Heights to go on a run for the next few years.
