The nba is officiated beautifully. There is no reason why major college basketball can’t be the same

 

Aren't NBA officials full time? College officials aren't. Could be part of the reason.

I find that being a game official is a lot like being a cop. Everybody has an opinion on how you should do your job but no body wants to step in and do it. I say this because I have worked as a police officer and I have attempted to be a football referee. Cop job was fine, referee, well, let's say it was an attempt. Didn't cost anyone the game but I have a totally different level of respect for them.

Understand what you are saying. 40 years ago, I was the worst high school basketball official in Ky. Gave it up because I thought the teams both deserved better, and I could really have used the money. Knew the rules throughout, was a whirling divirsh hustler on the court, but never was satisfied with my performance. Worst views of a play can often be on the court. Much better views are often in the stands. I greatly respect how difficult a refs job is! Thanks for doing your hustling best!

Yep. I mentioned this earlier in the thread. It’s absurd that they let them work 4 or 5 times a week and have other full time jobs. It’s absurd considering how much money is in the game.

Same. I tried and failed as an official, had rabbit ears and thought too much. As a coach I occasionally made my players officiate scrimmages so they got a taste of just how difficult it is. Refereeing is one of those things everyone should have to do at least once to gain some respect for it, alongside waiting tables and teaching.

 

Most alarming to me is how many players have an imbedded disrespect for officials nowadays. Nauseating to watch some player's histrionics after nearly every call, arms out like they've been horribly wronged. Officials have become some player's default scapegoat for failure.

And kids complaining has becoming high school and college official’s rationalization for being so bad at their job.

 

The power conference in college basketball need to come together and create a full time officiating program.

This wouldn't relate back to the UK-UNC game from the NCAA tournament last March where the UK faithful lost their minds over Higgins' working the game, would it? Absolutely not. While Higgins lost his mind in that game the reaction by some uk fans was awful and embarrassing.

 

Flipping the script. I guess you’re part of the .000001% of basketball fans who think college officiating is good right now.

 

It’s embarassing and awful. The amount of $$ in the college game is crazy. The power conferences should come together and employ full time officials who make it a career just like the nba. They also need to closely emulate how the nba game is called.

 

Keep defending college officiating. It’s funny.

It’s simple. In the nba the officials do not have other outside employment. They are employed full time directly by the nba. College officials almost all have other jobs/businesses and are not employed full time by the

NCAA/conferences.

 

College officials don’t get

The training, scrutiny or accountability that Nba officials get.
