Sad to hear for America, understand it for Mr. Warner.

I thought that the Democrats might actually have a moderate run for President. I guess that won't be the case.

My choice has already drop out. Sad to hear, I think he would make a great President.

Without being too cynical, there is propably alot more to the story than this. My guess is that he's watching this ugly Senate race in Virginia between Webb and Allen and all the garbage that is coming up and made his decision against running...

Yes and no. Warner is more effected by not taking the years out of his life that a run would make. He is still young and there will be time for a run later I think. Warner had to endure some of that when he ran for Governor and GOP was trying full force to not loose an executive mansion that they had held for 8 years.

 

The truth is Warner is a very good man and a very effective leader that gets things done and is one of best governors Virginia has had. :thumb:

Usually, when prospective candidates drop out to "spend more time with their families", they are really telling us that either they know they can't win or they are aware of some "dirt" that they wish to keep under the bed. Speak all the accolades you want but the unlikelihood of victory is probably the main reason for the "withdrawal". Also remember, when you are a Democrat or a Republican, "moderate" is just another word for "not quite as liberal as some".

Is this an example of a good candidate, just not wanting to put themselves and their family through the meat grinder that is our political process? Another example of why it is becoming increasingly difficult to have two good, quality candidates running? We seem more and more to be the last buyer from a litter of pups and settling on the runt rather than the first buyer and getting the pick of the litter.

Maybe. But then do you live in Virginia where I have for 15 years? Having met Mark Warner and watching first hand him handle this state I would say that there isn't any dirt on him or it would have come out long ago by this state's GOP. So, speak all the negatives you want, it doesn't really mean you know that much about Mark Warner and the job he has done in public office. :irked:

I speak no negatives but merely state what appears to be the most likely scenerio. From the tone of your response, I would say that you are less than objective but, instead, a partisan. From my many family ties in Virginia, I have concluded that, so far as Warners go, John is preferrable to Mark.

I would say that depends on where you live in Virginia. (Where do your many family ties reside?) Mark Warner was a great help to Southside when it was devestated by NAFTA and FTA. And if you check Virginia polls he left as one of the most popular governors in history and this is a very very Republican state now.

 

Not really partisan, sorry to disappoint. I like George Allen a lot and will vote for him to return to the Senate. John Warner has received my support in the past as well.

 

Maybe I'm partial to Mark Warner because he was dealt a mess by Jim Gilmore. For those not familiar with Gilmore, he was the GOP chair once, he won election on getting rid of the car tax. The problem with that was it destroyed the local budgets that depended on those dollars to help fund education with dollars from Richmond. So basically Gilmore passed the burden along to the local leadership to raise local taxes. The same money was needed but he "passed the buck" to the localities. BTW, if you are wondering there was too much spending and that was the problem, Virginia is one of the lowest ranking states in terms of it's State Tax Rate.

Paul Harvey must be about ready with the rest of the story. When any politician drops out to spend more time with his family, it is usually because he knows he can't win or that he has spent too much time with someone else's "family".
