Oakland hit into a major league lead of 170 DP's and was absolutely one of the worse teams in the ML's hitting with RISP. They went 0 for 13 in that category last night and are 3 of 33 in their last few games, I believe. And yet they stand 4 wins away from the World Series.

 

Last season and previous seasons, we heard over and over that the Reds could not win with Sean Casey at 1B and yet here the Tigers are on the fasttrack for a World Championship with the Mayor at 1B and batting 3rd in their lineup.

 

Oakland's 1B hit below .200 for the season with RISP but somehow had 35 homers and 90some RBI's and Lou Pinella goes on and on about how bright of a future this young player has.

 

I believe the Reds starting right side of their infield on Opening Day 2005 is playing for a chance to go to the World Series. (Casey and Jimenez)

All year long, the Tigers have had very consistent pitching and most are young, with the exception of Rogers. Their middle relievers are solid and as you mentioned, can bring the heat....Jones the closer, just throws strikes and has command of all pitches. How many teams, have 3-4 guys that can touch 100mph...

 

I'm a firm believer, in quality starting pitching, solid middle and a quality closer, if you're going to be successful in the bigs'.

Strike 3 impresses me with his baseball smarts. I really think he is Leyland or maybe Sparky. If not I bet (no I'm not P.Rose) that he coached baseball somewhere in his day.

Thanks, just passionate about the game and been around it for a while. Doing several things, to keep me involved with Baseball, the greatest game there is, in my opinion.

At one point last night, I started wondering if we could get Yuzama (sp?) for Dunn or some other type of package and at his young age could he be the Reds' dominant closer for the next 7-8 years.

Stkie3 I really believe that you are Sparky Anderson or Jim Leyland! Your knowledge of the game of baseball is obviously excellent. I agree with pitching and strength up the middle for a recipie for winning baseball. I enjoyed listening to Pinella last night as well. Strike, would you by any chance be interested in the Cincy manager's position. Zumaya and Rodney, have overpowering FB's and good offspeed stuff, to be dominant in the closer roles.

 

If the Reds could land either, it would be an excellent addition. I don't see the Tigers parting with either, since they've gone with youth and a selected mix of veterans.

I agree about baseball being the greatest game. Growing up it was my passion. The game has really changed through the years but it is still a great game. (A thinking man's game.) IMO

I enjoy fundamentals of the game and believe in building a solid nucleus, up the middle. The Reds have Phillips and some are suggesting, moving to SS. I don't think Clayton is the answer and his age is around 36-37, so his years are few. Griffey, could bring some trade value for talent and getting a leadoff hitter is critical.

 

Starting pitching, is a must....simply a must and finding a closer, using them in that role is also essential. I believe, it will be an interesting winter, around Cincinnati and may begin, right after the WS is over.

Today's game, is not always played by "the book", with the increased use of middle relief pitching, match-ups are critical, closers come in in save or win situations, base stealing is all but disappeared, bunting and advancing the runner, is a lost art....I'm a fundamental guy but I also like the Earl Weaver, 3 run HR mentality. I played Legion baseball 2 summers, in the Washington D.C. area and got to know him, through my uncle.

The Reds need him, they had entirely too many K's this year. Which is an aspect of the game, that is essential to winning, advancing baserunners.

 

I've heard during many of the playoff games, the announcers discussing how important it is, to advance runners into scoring position. A GB out to the 2nd basemen, with a man on 2nd base, is a productive at-bat, with less than 2 outs.

 

Hitting behind the runner, when they are running or a hit-and-run is called, is key to moving from 1st to 3rd. The Reds, did not have productive at-bats when they could have moved a runner up or bunted them over.

 

To get RBI's, the runners must be in scoring position, via basestealing or advancing them, which the Reds were very weak at in my opinion. I wonder how they compared to the rest of the NL, in team K's.
