This may be true, but for some reason I don't buy it. How come teams like Ashland, Highlands, Cov Cath, Lex Cath, etc. don't have a hard time finding good teams to play?

I don't think I would put Ashland in with the other three teams you mentioned when it comes to playing good teams.

No disrespect to Ashland but, those three play three of the harder schedules in the whole state... although I will admit Ashland's schedule is much tougher than JC's this year it is nowhere near Highlands, Cov Cath, or Lex Cath this year or any year IMO.

I just threw Ashland in because it is a team in the Eastern half of the state, near JC. It's not on par with Highlands or Cov Cath, however I wouldn't say it is far behind Lex Cath. Either way, I think you get the point, Im not here to defend Ashland's schedule. I just don't buy the fact that JC can't find quality teams to play.

I now think JC will be able to find stronger teams to play starting with next years schedule. They have 5 - 6 open slots on their schedule for next year and hopefully a strong finish to the season this year will help draw them some attention from better football programs.

T-Cat4Life, I wasn't trying to get the whole JC V. Ashland debate started with my last post. I understand what you were trying to say by putting Ashland in there. Hope my last quote wasn't taken the wrong way. :thumb:

Johnson Central’s football program is definitely on the rise – and IMO needs quality games to continue improving. I think that with your success this year (and the associated attention) good teams will want to play you. Hopefully it will get easier for you to schedule good teams - which will help your program (and our district) in the respect department.

I think Ashland needs to add some new tough teams to our schedule too.

I completly agree with you on that.

"To be the man you have to beat the man" attitude is the attitude both JC and Ashland should take into consideration when they are scheduling teams. With JC's program on the rise and Ashland already established both these schools could have really tough schedules and still have very good records come season's end.

I think he has talking about competitive teams within reasonable distance. I, for one, would love to see Belfry, Russell, Ironton, and Breathitt on the schedule.

He is refering to a local 2A school whom the Tomcats played earlier this year when he talks about local schools not wanting to play. They were offered a huge check to play in Johnson Centrals Touchstone Energy Bowl and declined. Now as far as the schedule goes, I would like to see a tougher schedule but I dont want to have to drive 2 hours to the games to see it. From our location we could play some local powers like Belfry, Prestonsburg, Sheldon Clark, Pikeville, Ironton, Spring Valley WV, etc. With the new 6A format JC is going to be looking at some good drive times so it would make sense to schedule local teams that have had good programs instead of going to say Lexington and Louisville to find games.

Wow folks, I don't know about this. It's a good question...which team would win?

It's kind of hard to compare the two...the 2000 team was a Class 4A team and had some real nice wins during the regular season (@ Tates Creek, Paintsville, @ Boyd County). Several of their games were close, so the team "knew" how to win close games. The defense definitely bailed them out several times during the season. Who can forget the great game at Boyd County for the District title? Another impressive number....7...that's the number of KY playoff teams JC played during the regular season.

I think it would be a great game between the two, and right now I can't really say who I think would win. Let's let the 2006 season play out first.

I've heard that Belfry and Ironton are possible match-ups on next years schedule.

The 2000 team played one team that resembled this 2006 team and that was Tates Creek. In their first meeting, Tates Creek was banged up a little bit and was missing its starting fullback and I think that the Commodores thought the Golden Eagles would be an easy Homecoming win. The result was that Johnson Central ran the ball down Tates Creek's throats and was the more physical team. In the rematch, which took place at Johnson Central in the second round of the playoffs, Tates Creek was healthy and JC suffered a key first half injury to its star RB/LB Scott Salyer. The result was Tates Creek's depth and speed wore the Golden Eagles down and the Commodores won going away. Tates Creek lost in the state semifinals in 2000.

The 2006 team is exactly the kind of team that gave Bill Musick's best teams fits. They have a big strong fullback, lots of depth, speed, and a credible kicking game. Coach Musick's team relied on physically wearing down the opponent's defense, staying close for a half, and then dominating the second half after fatigue set in on the opposing defense. That strategy worked great until the team met teams with more size and depth in the playoffs. That is where being the state's smallest 4A school began to show.

Whether the 2006 team goes deep into the playoffs or not, Coach Matney and his staff have addressed the depth issue and JC is deeper and the school has a larger enrollment than most of the teams that it might face in the playoffs. This team also does not rely on brute force to win games in the same way that the 2000 team did.

I loved Coach Musick's attitude toward football. You knew what his teams' game plans were and he expected that the plan might not work for half a game or more. But he and his players were confident that the second half belonged to them and all they had to do was stay close for a half. For the 2000 team, that strategy worked 11 out of 12 times and I enjoyed watching every game. The 2000 team was the most exciting JC team to watch ever, IMO. The dramatic road win at Boyd County was the most memorable come from behind win that season, but JC staged several second half comebacks.

If my memory serves me right JC had 7 fourth quarter comebacks and 4 within the last 2 minutes of the ballgame. Definately alot of tight butts in attendance that year.
