I agree completely it is almost like saying Logan County should be #1 (no I don’t think so) because they haven’t lost. The rankings are nothing more than for us to fuss about. However you have to take the whole season in prospective.

Syracuse was unranked. Ashland was #4. I'm not saying that Ashland should be or will be the new #1, but it's not like they were coming from way back in the pack. You're right, the early season losses can't be dismissed, but Ashland's come a long way since those games and they just took down #1. They're as hot as any team in 4A right now.

I love analogy's! Ashland hasn't done enough to deserve the number one ranking, IMO. However they are seemingly getting closer game by game. Ashland is notorious for starting the season slow, mainly due to losing a large number of linemen every single year. The skill players are available basically every season, the kids in the trenches as well as the defense are what really makes Ashland a top team or a middle of the pack team every season.

 

This year it has came together nicely for the Tomcats. The defense is amazing, they only allowed Johnson Central 18 points in this one, the lowest JC has scored all season. The Eagles next lowest points total this season was 31, to one of the best teams in West Virginia, whom would be a 6A team in Kentucky.

 

It would be hard for anyone to jump Ashland from #4 to #1 and personally I would still place JC in front of them, I like the underdog role. I would have Wayne at numero uno, followed by JC and then Ashland. I will say this though, Ashland's defense is good enough to give them a chance against anyone in the class and their line play has came a long way since the losses to Harlan County and George Washington.
