What can Cooper do to get better ?

Featured Replies

Any opinions on offense or defense?

Stay the course. When these kids mature into jrs and seniors you will have an experienced team with lots of game time under their belts. They will learn to win. There has to be some bodies in those halls. Why the low participation? Has basketball become that big?

Merge with Boone County and you instantly have 90 kids on the team and enough talent to go around.

Now seriously, I don't think there is anything you can do this year. The problem isn't the coach. You keep doing what you do to get the kids ready for each game. You have to keep the players spirits up so they don't give up and don't give in to negativity.

I wish I knew how to get more boys to come out for the team. Boone Co has the same problem. But I don't know if the ones you have to beg to come out will be on the field any way.

Sit some players not giving effort & give more young players a chance that are busting their butts in practice. At least they will get some minutes to help prepare them for next year & possibly motivate some that aren't stepping up. It can't hurt @ this point.

Coopers doing it right, play as many young kids you can, that can handle it, in a down year and worry about progression not the scoreboard.

Reminds me of the SK 2 and 11 teams years ago.

Cooper's issue is the lines. There are only a couple seniors on the lines and they have been hurt and unable to play often. They just don't have size and experience up front to stabilize things.

Unfortunately I don't see a lot of promise for next year either as the bulk of the linemen appear to be sophomores and need time to grow and mature.

Cooper has a lot of speed at the skill positions but are not able to get things going at the line to open anything up.

I agree the O & D lines are Cooper's biggest issues, along with QB position. Armour is pretty much being thrown into a position that he's not comfortable at & it's sad because he's a great slot receiver. When you look @ the JV & freshman team there's not a lot of help coming in the next few years. They are struggling also. The sophmore class seems to be the class w/ the most talent of the 4 in several different positions, yet the junior & senior classes are very limited in # on the field. It's frustrating & I hope the Jags can at least pull out a few wins.

Yea the line is definitely small ... and the safeties have to start playing deep , too many deep plays to have lineback/safety hybrids

Graduation hits everyone. Keep on battling.

Not sure why this is even a thread. Cooper is having a bad year after getting hit hard by graduation and there seems to be a rush to hit the panic button. Someone mentioned earlier to play they "young guys"? Take a look, they are playing young guys. Unless they plan to go down to the Freshman and MS level you can't get much younger.

Another person mentioned that they beat the halls to get more kids to come out? Cooper's numbers are about the same as they've been the last 5 years on average 60-65ish, which is about the same as they had when they were playing for a state title just 5 years ago and winning 2 regional titles and 3 district championships in the same time span.

I think sometimes people get spoiled with success and don't know how to accept that this type of situation (graduation and youth) is bound to happen at some point when you have the smallest district in Boone Co among the 4 schools. This team has 12 seniors on it I believe and half of them haven't played meaningful varsity minutes until this year. Things will get markedly better over the next couple of seasons but unfortunately they are having to bite the bullet now.

Sometimes it's suggested that the coaches play guys who are on the sidelines instead of who the coach has out there. It is my opinion that the coaches already know the talent on the team from seeing them play in spring ball and all summer long. If you put the guys in the game who are standing on the sidelines, whatever situation you had on the field will just go from bad to worse.

Sometimes it is just an issue of maturity. The guys on the sideline need another year of growth and time in the weight room. Sometimes it is just the fact that not everyone is a football player.

I was in a situation once where we just didn't have enough football players on the team. You'd hear parents on the sideline saying if the starters can't do it let's try some of the guys who aren't playing. They had no idea what they were saying. Some of those boys would have got hurt. Granted, this was not high school football. But trust me, when you're playing a team, say like Cov Cath who has a once in a decade level of talent, you can't put just anybody out there.
