Special Teams Play

Featured Replies

Special teams play can be a real determining factor as we approach the last half of the season and move toward the playoffs. How has your special teams play (kicking game; returns, etc.) been this year? What has been the impact on game outcomes, and how do you see it affecting the final games? Who are some of the standout players on special teams?

Western Hills special teams have been pitiful. The loss of majority of there games are due to their poor feild position they give up on Kickoff and Punt. Its not due to the coverage, but the kicker, they just happen to have the wrong guy kicking for them.

Tommy Mcnutt for Mayfield has been outstanding as he has won a game against Hopkinsville with a 45-yard field goal in the final minutes and he has kicked around 95% of his kickoffs into the endzone causing the opposing team to have to go 80-yards each time. The great thing is that he is only a junior and should be highly looked at by many colleges both in and out of state next year. Mayfield also has a great punter in Aarron Williams who has consitenly pinned the other team back deep into their own territory.

So the Cards are set if it comes down to a game of field position!!!

Raceland has had alot of success on special teams so far this season. The rams have returned 4 punts for TD and have had two others that have been called back on penalties. Also have had 5 blocked punts and the kicking game has been looking good. Derrick Beach and Benji Mullins are a nasty duo back there returning punts and kick offs. Most teams have just started punting the ball out of bounds against them.

:thumb: One blocked punt was recovered in the end zone by a freshman resulting in a TD. We have also kicked a couple of FG of 30 + yards.

:thumb: :jump: I agree on the Raceland special teams play this season. They have done a great job on both the returns and coverage on punts and k/o's. I also believe that special teams play is one of if not the most overlooked in the game. Special teams can win ball games, it has been proven over and over. A team that has good special teams play and plays stronng defense will win most games.

St. X has Anderson returning some kicks, anytime he gets the ball it could be 6.

I think, not sure, but think Male has Beauemont doing the same.

Again Kentucky has good kickers, "Mayfield, Trinity, CCH, St. X give him some time"

Cov Cath has the best special teams in the state. Josh Blesser punts and Shane Popham kicks with NFL stats. Josh is averaging in the upper 40's on punts and Shane is 9 of 10 on field goals with a 57 & 54 yard field goals and 23 kick-offs in the end zone. Hard to beat that pair.

It is hard to say who has the best special teams in the state, like I said many good kickers in KY. But it goes further than just the kickers. Long snappers, lineman, gunners, coaches, holders, blockers, return men.

Unless someone has traveled to all the teams and saw them play, only then one can say who has the best special teams. Does CCH have great SP teams, without a doubt. Best in KY, who knows.

Point taken.

Ben Revere Lex Cath- averages over 50 yards per kickoff return and over 40 yards per punt return with a combined 4 TD's.

After watching the yong man kick, and after seeing the D1 kids from CovCath kick (Big 10 and Sec), the best advice I could give him (the young man from Mayfield) is to work real hard on his hang time. While he does kick the ball far, and to be fair I only saw him kick one time, he needs to work on getting the ball higher in the air on his FG attempts (I watched him in practice prior to the game) and higher into the air on his kickoff, (too many line drive type kickoffs). Being a junior he has time, if he improves, to be a very good one....

Mercer is in trouble if a game comes down to an extra point or heaven forbid a field goal.

However, their kick return and punt return looks to be dangerous.

From what I've witnessed this year special teams are starting to get eliminated from some games.

When Highlands and CovCath meet later this year it would be exciting to watch the return guys take a shot at breaking a long one but that most likely won't happen.

Now that kickers are making 57 yard FGs why punt once you get across mid-field?

Let's pretend the following happens:

CovCath kicks off to start the game. Ball in the endzone. Highlands ball at the 20.

Highlands time consuming drive stalls at the 20. They kick a 37 yard field goal.

Highlands kicks off ball in endzone. CovCath ball at the 20. They drive to the 30 and kick a 47 yard field goal tying the game at 3. CovCath kicks off into the endzone. Highlands ball at the 20. Highlands starts a drive, gets to midfield and the quarter ends.

Now imagine how much fun the game could be if kickoffs could be returned out of the endzone or if kickoffs started at the 35 or 30:

CovCath kicks off to start the game. From 8 yards deep Highlands return man takes the ball out to midfield breaking several tackles. Fired-up Highlands scores in four plays make it 7-0!

But on the ensuning kickoff CovCath returns it from the goal-line to the Highlands 25 yard line! But wait there is a flag at midfield! Hold on CovCath! Back it up to the their 40. The Highlands crowd is going nuts! CovCath drives 30 yards but settle for a 47 yard FG, making it 7-3.

Next kickoff Highlands again brings it out from 8 yards deep but CovCath nails the return man at the 15 and recovers a fumble. The CovCath fans go nuts!

In all honesty...last Friday night on his kicks were not his best...but I do understand where you are coming from and appreciate the advice The young man, McNutt went to a couple of kicking camps...one that had kickers from all over the south and he was able to win the overall kicking competition with a 54-yard field goal. But as long as he is able to put the ball in the endzone and through the uprights I am sure that there will be some colleges that would love the chance to help coach him on some of the finer points...as he does have a very strong leg and the best part is that he is just a junior.
