gchs_uk9
Last season I posted a modified playoff proposal that would eliminate region and district alignments that we have seen in the past in an effort to place the 192 best teams in six classes of playoffs. Linked here is the original proposal: (http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-football-high/a-totally-reasonable-338368.html). In a nutshell, I proposed we use a power rating to determine the best teams and eliminate the 29 worst. In an effort to make it simple I used the Calpreps ratings, although I'd imagine an adoption of this system might include the adoption of a new rating system as well. After selecting the 192, teams would be divided into classes based on their most recent enrollments (January 2017); the 32 smallest are Class 1A, the next 32 smallest are Class 2A, and so forth. After determining the 32 teams in each class they would be divided into four regions of eight based on geography. This proposal was sent to the KHSAA and the members of the coaches advisory committee and I've received positive feedback from several members of both groups. Since proposing this on BGP, I've made two modifications: guaranteeing district champions host a first round game and automatically eliminating from postseason consideration any team that fails to win a regular season game. However, since it is so early in the season, neither stipulation can effectively be put in place at this time, so I'm considering all eligible and available. Below is, as of September 4, what a playoff bracket would look like for all six classes. (I update this at home each week; I will make an effort to post these semi-regularly on BGP) CLASS 1A Region I [8] Clinton County at [1] Mayfield [5] Crittenden County at [4] Murray [7] Campbellsville at [2] Owensboro Catholic [6] Ballard Memorial at [3] Russellville Region II [8] Eminence at [1] Lexington Christian [5] Paris at [4] Frankfort [7] Bethlehem at [2] Kentucky Country Day [6] Nicholas County at [3] Louisville Holy Cross Region III [8] Bishop Brossart at [1] Beechwood [5] Ludlow at [4] Covington Holy Cross [7] Bellevue at [2] Newport Central Catholic [6] Bracken County at [3] Raceland Region IV [8] Phelps at [1] Hazard [5] Fairview at [4] Williamsburg [7] Lynn Camp at [2] Paintsville [6] Prestonsburg at [3] Pikeville CLASS 2A Region I [8] Butler County at [1] Caldwell County [5] Trigg County at [4] Fort Campbell [7] Hancock County at [2] Edmonson County [6] McLean County at [3] Union County Region II [8] Green County at [1] Danville [5] Metcalfe County at [4] Monroe County [7] Washington County at [2] Glasgow [6] Bardstown at [3] Somerset Region III [8] Carroll County at [1] Christian Academy-Louisville [5] Owen County at [4] Lloyd Memorial [7] Gallatin County at [2] DeSales [6] Thomas Nelson at [3] Walton-Verona Region IV [8] Powell County at [1] Belfry [5] West Carter at [4] Leslie County [7] Knott County Central at [2] Russell [6] Bath County at [3] Pike County Central CLASS 3A Region I [8] Hart County at [1] Central [5] Western at [4] Larue County [7] Warren Central at [2] Elizabethtown [6] Calloway County at [3] Paducah Tilghman Region II [8] McCreary Central at [1] Boyle County [5] Garrard County at [4] Mercer County [7] Adair County at [2] Casey County [6] Russell County at [3] Taylor County Region III [8] Holmes at [1] Fleming County [5] Henry County at [4] Mason County [7] Pendleton County at [2] Bourbon County [6] Estill County at [3] Western Hills Region IV [8] Clay County at [1] Greenup County [5] Letcher County Central at [4] Lawrence County [7] Floyd Central at [2] Ashland [6] East Carter at [3] Bell County CLASS 4A Region I [8] Marion County at [1] Allen County-Scottsville [5] Warren East at [4] Hopkinsville [7] Hopkins County Central at [2] Franklin-Simpson [6] John Hardin at [3] Madisonville-North Hopkins Region II [8] North Oldham at [1] Collins [5] Waggener at [4] Shelby County [7] Valley at [2] Anderson County [6] Spencer County at [3] Moore Region III [8] Lincoln County at [1] Corbin [5] Harlan County at [4] Whitley County [7] Perry County Central at [2] Wayne County [6] Knox Central at [3] Rockcastle County Region IV [8] Rowan County at [1] Johnson Central [5] Franklin County at [4] Scott [7] Harrison County at [2] Lexington Catholic [6] Boyd County at [3] Highlands CLASS 5A Region I [8] Muhlenberg County at [1] Christian County [5] Apollo at [4] Graves County [7] Logan County at [2] South Warren [6] Ohio County at [3] Owensboro Region II [8] Atherton at [1] Bowling Green [5] North Bullitt at [4] Greenwood [7] Iroquois at [2] Bullitt Central [6] Fairdale at [3] Doss Region III [8] Seneca at [1] Covington Catholic [5] Cooper at [4] Jeffersontown [7] Woodford County at [2] South Oldham [6] Boone County at [3] Conner Region IV [8] Montgomery County at [1] Southwestern [5] West Jessamine at [4] Pulaski County [7] East Jessamine at [2] Madison Southern [6] South Laurel at [3] North Laurel CLASS 6A Region I [8] Marshall County at [1] Central Hardin [5] McCracken County at [4] North Hardin [7] Daviess County at [2] Meade County [6] Bullitt East at [3] Henderson County Region II [8] Southern at [1] St. Xavier [5] Butler at [4] Fern Creek [7] Eastern at [2] Male [6] DuPont Manual at [3] Pleasure Ridge Park Region III [8] Oldham County at [1] Trinity [5] Ballard at [4] Ryle [7] Dixie Heights at [2] Scott County [6] Campbell County at [3] Simon Kenton Region IV [8] Frederick Douglass at [1] Lafayette [5] Henry Clay at [4] Bryan Station [7] Paul Dunbar at [2] Tates Creek [6] George Rogers Clark at [3] Madison Central FAILED TO QUALIFY Barren County, Berea, Betsy Layne, Breathitt County, Breckinridge County, Caverna, Dayton, East Ridge, Fort Knox, Fulton City, Fulton County, Grant County, Grayson County, Harlan, Jackson County, Jenkins, Lewis County, Magoffin County, Middlesboro, Morgan County, Nelson County, Newport, Pineville, Shawnee, Shelby Valley, Sheldon Clark, Todd County Central, Trimble County, Webster County. gchs_uk9
A reminder to all: your favorite team may not be in the same class on this page as they are in real life. The current alignment uses date from 2011-14 while I'm only using enrollments from the more recent count (January 2017). Also, depending on which schools fail to qualify, your favorite team might be in one class for the playoffs today and then another class the next time they are posted. I'd highly encourage you to go back and read the original proposal for answers/clarification of all questions.
WHO'S NEXT?
I thought this was a great proposal when you originally introduced it. A playoff system with common sense, I hope the powers that be take a hard look at this again before we shuffle all 6 decks in the future.
ATLCat
Well done and well researched Think it would be a definite improvement over the current system.

region12hoops
If you're not going to separate Danville (2a) and Boyle Co (4a) why do you separate Pineville (1a) and Bell Co (3a)
gchs_uk9
If you're not going to separate Danville (2a) and Boyle Co (4a) why do you separate Pineville (1a) and Bell Co (3a) Boyle is 3A, not 4A. Also, I divided districts based on school size while also attempting to keep roughly the same number of schools per district. The 13th region has several small schools to pair with Pineville. The 12th Region doesn't, so Danville (and Somerset) were moved in with 3A schools.
gchs_uk9
I've meant to update this a few times during the season but I never got it onto BGP, although I've kept it updated at home. I'm posting what the brackets for 1A-6A would have looked like had this plan been implemented. First, an update on the rules: 1. Districts are used. They were linked above but I'll post again. District champions are guaranteed a first round home playoff game. To determine district champions I used actual games if teams played and the Calpreps project-a-matchup if they didn't play. 2. Any team who failed to win a game during the regular season is ineligible for the playoffs. This eliminated 18 schools. 3. Calpreps' power rating was used to rank all teams. Kentucky has 221 schools and 192 make the playoffs under this format. After eliminating 18 due to zero wins, the 11 worst rated teams were then eliminated. (calpreps.com) 4. The remaining 192 teams were classified based on their 2016-17 enrollment, with the smallest 32 placed in 1A, the next smallest 32 in 2A, and so on. (http://khsaa.org/reports/enrollments/20162017schoolenrollmenttotalsbyenroll.pdf) 5. Classes 1A-5A were then divided geographically into four regions of eight teams. Teams in each region were seeded 1-8 based on their power ranking. If a team was guaranteed a home first round game (provision 1 above), they could be seeded no lower than 4th. All other teams were then moved down. (Five teams were affected by this rule) 6. 6A was done slightly different. The eight western-most teams were put in Region I. The remaining 24 teams were all grouped together with the three highest rated teams each given a #1 seed. The four top seeded were then arranged to the worst #1 (Region I) was placed with the best #1 (Region II). The others were placed in Region III & IV. Teams were then seeded best to worst, with 1 vs. 24, 2 vs. 23, etc. 7. Regions are seeded 1-8 with the best seed always hosting. Semistates are hosted by odd regions in odd years, even regions in even years.
