Boone County/Cooper Updates Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Both teams will pound the ball this year. I'm not positive in the final

score but was somewhere around 28-7 Cooper or something like that. Don't quote me on the score.

Takeaways. Cooper will be ok running the ball but need their receivers to hang on to the ball. Too many drops to count. Boone's rb is big and will punish some guys but their O-Line needs to step up. They gave up somewhere around 8 sacks tonight. Coopers Lines are once again undersized but held their own most of the time. Their D-line needs to improve on short yardage situations but hopefully that comes

with time.

Only time will tell, could be interesting for Cooper with so many young players. This would be what they call a rebuilding year.

Thanks for the update and yes the Jags will be very young. They will compete hard but can't wait to see this young group in the next 2 years.

How was Coopers qb?

He actually threw the ball pretty well and can run pretty well. He was a wr last year so has good wheels. What he needs to work on is his footwork a little more, but we all know Coach Borchers tends to turn out some pretty good QB's. The last 6 qb's he's had have done pretty darn good so let's see if the QB whisperer has another one up his sleeve this year with Michael Armour.

I will also add, the backup QB looked pretty good also. He throws a real nice ball so could be interesting for next year if he gets some reps this year. I was really impressed with his size and arm strength. They just need some receivers with some hands.

The score was 13-0 at halftime. The second half started with Boone getting the ball first. Boone began what turned out to be an 8+ minute drive of power football. Cooper couldn't stop the fullback. There was little variation on that drive. Everyone knew who was getting the ball and where he was going. The line gave him a three yard head of steam and the FB would do the rest. They'd get up and dust themselves off and have another go. The coach rewarded him with the final hand-off for a short dive into the end zone. Missed xtra-point. Score was 13-6.

Cooper got the ball and the Boone defense held them and quickly got the ball back. At this point the JV squads took the field. Cooper JV scored three more touchdowns. Chris Collins scored easily twice running the ball. I doubt he'll be playing JV during the season. Final score was 33-6.

Varsity score was 13-6 Cooper but it seemed like Cooper's defense was wearing down and Boone's offense was gaining momentum. I would have liked to see how things turned out if they played longer.

Boone has lots to work on. The passing game was not there. The best pass play of the night for Boone was spoiled by the sun. The qb rolled out and the jack back was open over the middle. He turned to look for the ball and you could tell all he saw was a bright orange orb blazing in his eyes. The ball sailed past him. The line needs to challenge itself to improve its pass blocking.

Mike Armour did reasonably well at QB for Cooper. As was mentioned, he was a WR last year. I'm not sure when he last played QB. His best asset is that he is a good athlete. I expected them to let him roll out and they did. He gained some yards that way when he decided not to throw. He also had a couple of nice throws, one for a TD. At other times his throws were not quite there. They will need to get a run game going to relieve some pressure from Armour. He looks like he will develop into it as it's still early in the season.

I also saw some players on the sideline that should be able to help the cause, not at QB but on the D side of the ball. There's a transfer from Cov Cath that used to go to Cooper that is now back. Spencer will strengthen them against the run.

Couple thoughts on what I saw.

both teams are going to live or die by their lines.

Boone needs its o-line to gel and give their back 3-4 yards of space every play. If they can do that Boone will keep things close with long drives and wearing defenses down. It showed against Cooper in the second half although at that point a number of the 2-way players had been subbed out in coopers linebacking core so the penetration in the back field had slowed.

For Cooper, they need to be able to better defend the situation above. With their lack of size on the defensive line they need to start using shifts/tricks to move the gaps and not give the runner a starting hole. That hole allowed Boone 3-4 yards each running play and allowed them to grind.

Armour played QB his freshman year so only had 1 year off from being at the position.

Some of the veteran WRs didn't see a lot of action on offense yesterday, giving the younger guys some reps. Hopefully the drops will become less frequent quickly.

Also I am hoping they start throwing quicker short routes. Saw a few times Armour seemed to hold on to the ball way to long and missed open guys. This was something that the team struggled with towards the end of last year as well.

After watching the film with a player, S/O to Hunter Freeman, Jantje Wingo, and RJ Summers, and to the O-line that was getting push and opening holes. During that long drive (75 yrds) just after the half, the three runners kept Boone moving when the drive got to mid field. #38 was getting some rest when they reached mid field and then came back in at about the Cooper 35 yrd line. Boone continued to pound the line and those three kept it going. Wingo almost broke free inside the ten to score but came up a few yards short. #38 went in nearly untouched.

I imagine Borchers will have a defensive answer to slow down the power running attack when Boone and Cooper meet in the regular season. I have a feeling Boone will have more diversity in their offense by then. You don't show everything in a scrimmage. And the power back attack was working.

I thought Milburn was at QB against Boone's frosh team?

Yes, Milburn was QB for the last quarter for the Jv/frosh.

Mikey Armour is a Jr - as a So he played WR and as a Fr played QB.

Milburn is no longer enrolled at Cooper, he is at Ryle. He was stating that Armour's freshman year he thought Milburn was the QB.

This scrimmage was great for Cooper and it showed a lot of things. One thing you have to remember, this was a scrimmage. Cooper made 0 adjustments with their defense and game planned even less for what Boone did offensively. Boone did a good job of getting push, and Cooper needs to show a little more fight and get off the field on 3rd and 4th down. Overall, though, I was not did heartened at what I saw. Cooper moved the ball, had 2 fumbles which should have been scores, dropped a few balls which will be caught in the season, and things will be ok defensively when the coaches get a chance to game plan and scheme and adjust. Last night was about seeing who had it for Friday nights, and who may need a little more time on Saturday mornings.
