How did you get your football concussion?

Featured Replies

Had 3 over the years. First was freshman year. Made a tackle and everything went black for a min. Think I missed one or two plays.

Senior year before 1st playoff game was a bad one. Wednesday practice we went 1st team def vs second team off. Some freshman (Shaun Alexander) went out for a pass in the middle. Me and our stud linebacker went to sandwich him as he caught the pass. Well we collided helmet to helmet and didn't get a good hit in on the freshman. Went straight to first team offense and I forgot the 3-4 new plays we just put in Monday& Tuesday. Needless to say coach hauck had a few choice words for me :)

Third was a car wreck that it just so happens, me and that same LB were in the back seat. Bumped heads and I was out for about 5 min.

Never diagnosed but I know of at least one game in which I took two shots to the head. Playing vs Newport I took an ear-hole shot, I remember seeing gold stars as I started at their lights. Later in the game on a sneak I took a shot to the base of helmet just short of the goal line as I was already down by contact. On the next play we called a sweep, instead of pitching it to the RB, I pitched it to the FB and we fumbled and lost possession.

I was never diagnosed and actually didn't come out of the game (stupid) but if it wasn't a concussion I can't imagine what one would be like. It was against Lex Cath my junior year, head to head hit with the scrambling QB. It took a good 10 seconds for my vision to come back/the blackout to go away and I just felt a little nauseous the rest of the night.

Most hard hits come with a little daze afterwards but I never had the effects like I did after that one.

NEVER had one. I had a ton of headaches. Just got over them. It's a mindset. Some people never got dropped on their head as a baby.

We had a great coach that worked our backs and necks during workouts.

Are you saying a concussion is a mindset?

Never got one in football but did get a basketball concussion

Went up for a rebound in traffic. Someone got tripped up in the lane and when I landed they were under me. Fell head first onto the court and landed on the side of my head. Went black.

When my eyes opened everyone was staring down and I had blood streaming down my face. Had to get a few stitches beside my eye brow and had a minor concussion.

Yes. I know I had several. I took care of myself in the weightroom. I did neck machines and hyper extensions to help. I used my mouthpieces correctly

When I did I put myself in a dark room

Correct mouthpiece use does help but there's no evidence that lack of neck strength has anything to do with concussions.

I don't think there was such a thing as concussions in the 80's. But, I had my bell rung a few times.

Couldn't agree more. Had two that i know of. My senior year in hs was playing strong safety and brought down a FB about 80 lbs heavier than me twice. The second time my temple met his knee. This was pre air helmet era.

I played the rest of the game and fulfilled my duties well. But my post game talk just didn't check out. I was there, but not there. It was business as usual come Monday watching film and preparing for the next opponent. There really wasn't a protocol at that time.

In 89 i got a concussion on a helmet to helmet hit while playing scout team D3 college football. The starting LB wasn't liked by many for his deliberate dirty play against his younger teammates. He chose to blow me up on a quick hitch to the flat while I played scout TE. I caught the pass turned up field and BOOM!!!

I didn't fumble, didn't black out and got back up quickly. But I wasn't home!!! :lol2:

Was held from practice for 2 days and the LB got put on notice by the DC and HC to stop the cheap shots! He sat out the next game since apparently he was a wee bit shaken from the hit also...

Strengthening Neck Muscles Helps Prevent Concussion | BrainLine

Watch the 30 for 30 on the Chicago Bears. Listen to McMahan when he goes to these specialist. Every doctor he had looked at the head, but FINALLY a educated doctor looked at his neck and fixed the spinal C-1 thru 4 vertebrae and got all the fluid stuck there to drain. Jim McMahan said his vision cleared up and so did his headaches. Yes, the neck has a TON to do with concussion.

Yes concussions are mindset. I got dizzy as well. My frontal lobe felt like it was going to explode at times. I took care of myself when they happened. NO TV, NO Lights. If you do go outside wear sunglasses. Alot of trainers and doctors forget to protect the eyes from the bright stadium lights.

NO you can't prevent a concussion, but you can reverse the side effects by taking care of it early.
