September 27, 200620 yr Just for fun, because it's not going to happen but what in the event that this happens the rest of the way: STL(2-4) REDS(4-1) HOUS(2-3) The Reds and Cards end in a tie for the NL Central. From my understanding, if the Reds and Cards winning percentage was higher than either of the two second place clubs(Phillies,Dodgers), then the Reds would win the Central because of their head-to-head resume against the Cards. Of course that scenario is VERY unlikely. Now, if the Reds and Cards winning percentages are lower than either of the two second place clubs, (much more likely), then the Reds and Cards would play a one-game playoff to determine the Central champion. The site of the game would be determined by a COIN TOSS. Thus, if my understanding is correct(and I am not 100% certain), the Reds and Cards would likely play a one-game playoff with the site of the game to be determined by the flip of a coin. I'll be satisfied if a coin toss is necessary! What about you?
September 27, 200620 yr Anything is possible and until some big lady grabs a microphone and starts singing.....you just never know.
September 27, 200620 yr Author Now, let's just get plain nutty here. What if this happens the rest of the way? STL(2-4) REDS(4-1) HOUS(3-2) The the NL Central ends in a three-way tie. From my understanding(Again, not 100% certain), we start looking at who has a better head-to-head record against the other. If the Reds have a better head-to-adead against the Cards and Astros(and I think that is the case), the Reds would choose to be designated as club "A," "B," or "C" . Then if Houston has a better head-to-head against the Cards(do they?), Houston would choose one of the remaining two designations. The Cards would then be left with the one remaining designation. As you will see shortly, the Reds would choose to be team "C". Houston would choose to be team "A". This would leave the Cards as team "B". Here's what happens. The Astros("A") will play the Cards("B") at Minute Maid Park and the winner of that game will play Cinci at Great American Ball Park for the title. That would be LOVELY!!!!!
September 27, 200620 yr Author Just read where the Reds already lost the coin toss to the Cards in the event of a tie between the two. So the extra game would be at Busch. If the Cards and Astros end up tied, the 163rd game would be @ Houston.
September 27, 200620 yr MIAMI -- OK, here's my best effort at sorting out what may await next week. If the Reds and Cardinals tie for the division lead, there would be a playoff game at Busch Stadium next Tuesday based on coin flips held Sept. 12. A coin flip to determine who would host a Reds-Astros playoff is pending, according to MLB. Here's the fun one: In the event of a three-way tie between the Reds, Astros and Cardinals, the following would take place. The Reds have the best record head-to-head among the three teams, so they'll have the choice of what will happen. 1.) The Reds will play a home game against either the Cardinals or the Astros. If the Reds win that, they would play a home game against the other team the following day. 2.) Or, the Reds could choose to let the Cardinals and Astros play each other Tuesday, then face the winner of that game on the road Wednesday. Don't make any travel plans based on all this stuff, but this is what I've got right now...
September 27, 200620 yr I wouldn't be planning anything yet. I am really hoping they can pull this miracle off but I'm not gettin my hopes up.
September 27, 200620 yr Author Let me make a bit of a correction in the event of a three-way tie for the division . The Reds would have the choice of choosing designation "A", "B", or "C" . If they choose "A" , then it would be(assuming Houston has the head-to-head vs. STL and chooses "C"): Reds vs. Cards @ Cinci Houston @ winner of Cinci/Cards game If the Reds choose designation "C" and Houston chooses "A" then: Cards @ Houston Reds @ Houston Here's the possibilities: #1 Reds Choose : A Houston Chooses: B Cards get: C RESULT: Hous @ Cinci ; Cards @ winner of Cinci/Hous #2 Reds Choose: A Houston Chooses: C Cards get: B RESULT: Cards @ Cinci ; Hous @ winner of Cards/Cinci #3 Reds Choose : C Houston Chooses: A Cards Get: B RESULT: Cards @ Houston ; Cinci@ winner of Cards/Houston For obvious reasons, a team would not choose to be "B" over "A" or "C" unless they wanted to play on the road instead of home. BOTTOMLINE: In a three-way tie, the Reds would have the choice of playing TWO games at home or ONE game on the road to win the Central. Which would you choose? Going to either Busch or Minute Maid for one win or Staying at GABP for two wins?
September 27, 200620 yr In the two games at home argument is the fact that Tuesday and Wednesday would be the regular days for Harang and Arroyo I do believe...
September 27, 200620 yr Author Oh, BTW, all of this is pointless if Chris Machalek can't outduel Anibal Sanchez(no-hitter, 2.80 ERA) tonight. Good luck Jerry!
