High School lineman and the pressures to get bigger?

Featured Replies

I like for our Lineman to be stronger. Here is our OL's sizes-LT- 6-3 250 LG-6-2 245 C- 6-0 240 RG- 6-2 245 RT- 5-11 240.

Are any of these guys being lookd at by scouts?

I brought up a similar question last year, do we as coaches have an obligation to help our athletes lose the wt. or present different healthier diets when we are finished playing. Overwhelimingly the attitude was that we should not. I for one feel badly when a former player, a couple years removed, stops by and looks like a couch potatoe. We can help them gain wt. but do we help them change their lifestyle when the playing days are over?

So the "overwheliming attitude" is not to care about the kids longterm health?

There are several boys that we know that are not big linemen. They are quick off the ball and can play several different linemen positions due to the fact they are quick. I do want to say that they have been told more than once by scouts that they need to be bigger. If they cant be taller they need to put on 50 pounds. What ever happened to the days when technique and being able to take a hit and give one mattered.

It would be nice if some colleges take a Sunday and put the movie (Rudy) in just to remember to keep perspective.

Yes. Two of the three seniors are being looked at by NAIA and 1-AA schools.

It isn't all about the size of a line. A small lineman with good technique can play. Corbins' line is LT 6'1" 261, LG 6'0" 180, C 6'0" 238 RG 5'9" 223 RT 5'10" 260

Doesnt St X have the biggest O-Line in the nation?

Elvis Dumervil from UL was under-sized...but his speed and technique led to a few sack records...

I happy to say that this is not a practice shared by Highlands. They are encouraged to be healthy and strong. They are given guidelines on calories and food choices. They have a strong workout ethic that helps to build muscle not flab. Lots of running and weight lifting makes for a stronger, healthier player. More reps, less Micky D's. Speed is a key factor. The ones who are a little on the heavy side are generally encouraged to lose pounds and get faster and stronger. BRAVO BIRDS!!!

Sheldon Clark almost always feilds 300lb lineman. But they aren't gaining the weight to be on the line. They are just some big boys. Most of SC's Lineman are encouraged to wrestle. Which is definately not for someone trying to "bulk up". But it does make them more agile and gives them better stamina and power.

I’m sure everyone remembers the Washington Redskins offensive line named “The Hogs”. Here are their stats:

Joe Jacoby 6’-7” 320 Lbs.

George Starke 6’-5” 260 Lbs.

Russ Grimm 6’-3” 275 Lbs.

Mark May 6’-6” 288

Jeff Bostic 6’-2” 250

Average 278 Lbs.

In this day and age, with the exception of Jacoby, would they even get looked at for College?

Most of those guys would be getting looks at tight end!
