February 24, 20179 yr For those that know the young guys better than I do...who do we need to keep an eye on this spring? Player and Position. There are going to be several young guys that will get an opportunity to play every day -- the first two position players that come to mind are Eugenio Suarez and Jose Peraza. Suarez posted decent power numbers last year but has a long way to go. Peraza was a highly touted prospect who will be getting his first opportunity to start on the major league level. He has shown he can get on base, and he also has excellent speed. Personally, I'm more interested in the development of the starting pitching. Amir Garrett is a 6'6'' lefty that played basketball for St. John's. He has since quit basketball to focus on baseball, and has shown some good promise. He's probably not quite ready for the bigs but I'm excited to follow him this year. Robert Stephenson was the Reds #1 pick (24th overall) in 2011. He has had a couple starts on the big league level with mixed success, and I'm hoping he can take a big leap forward this year. Many fans have been frustrated with his lack of progress, but today is his 24th birthday so I'm still hopeful. Cody Reed is another big, young southpaw who has struggled on the major league level but looks promising. Rookie Davis is another young pitcher that I'll be following closely.
