What team has the best backcourt in the state? (Take 2)

Featured Replies

Original Post by @ryme32: Best backcourt in the state are both from Hopkinsville, KY. Hop town has a Shorty Cager and Jalen Johnson with Josiah Patton. UHA has Kyky Tandy and Trey Hollowell.

Watch the CAPS locks, we were having a good discussion.

Not the best in the state but region wise Campbell and Paris are superior in the 10th. Don't know how well the would compete with the previous mentioned in the state.

Cole Crace and Mason Blair from Johnson Central have to be one of the better backcourts in the state as well. I would say they have the best numbers of any backcourt in the state.

Also list quality wins! There are many putting up big numbers with green light and no quality wins.

Give me a backcourt of your chosing from around the state and put them on Cole and Mason's team against the same schedule. Do you think they would put up the same numbers, better numbers, or worse numbers? Honest question as I don't know. Then we could compare apples to apples.

Those two are tough to guard against double and triple teams and they have played against some talented players like Tim Dalton (3 times) Gage Hughes (2 Times) Dylan James (2 times) Jaren Lovely and Trenton Russell (2 times) etc. Is the competition the same? No it is not. But I know Mason averaged around 15ppg for his AAU team this summer and started with Tim Dalton and Tavieon Hollingsworth on a team that went to the national championship. He had big scoring games against some of the best in the nation and was good enough to lead that supremely talented team in scoring.

Match him with an ultra athletic guard in Cole Crace who is averaging 21, 7, 7 with several in game dunks this year and you have one tough backcourt regardless of where they play or who they play.

I'd say hollowell and Tandy are the best in WKY with Cager and Johnson right behind them. I haven't seen enough in central KY and Louisville to compare.

I think having the best backcourt doesn't necessarily mean best numbers. A lot of the premier backcourts in the state could put up huge numbers in region 15, however I don't think they would be as gaudy because many of them play on more complete and balanced teams so there isn't a need for them to do so, or their team would be so far ahead at half that the wouldn't play much in the second half.

Defense and control are huge things for me and making those around you better is a good characteristic of a quality player. I would rather have two guards who can play great defense and only average 30 ppg between them, but make their teammates better, than two guys to shoot 50 times a game and play no defense.

With that being said, Mason and Cole are very, very good, and I would probably have them in my top 5 backcourts. Johnson and Cager I think are even better, and both are juniors which is scary, but Covington Catholic's backcourt I think is the best. CVH and CJ are great at both ends of the floor, they play one of the toughest schedules in the state, and they are smart players who stay under control. Add Ruthsatz to that, and one can see why they are considered a state title contender.

Neither one of them play defense. They are a score only tandem.

Good points. I don't think Mason and Cole are the best backcourt in the state but agree they are in the top 5. With different talent that around them I think their numbers would be much different and look more complete. Two very good very athletic guards.

Hollowell has played much better defense this season from what little I've seen and what I heard. I do agree that Cov Cath probably has the best backcourt in the state.

How many times have you watched them play?

Their defense is DRASTICALLY improved over last year.

I've watched them quite a bit, Hollowell's defense has improved but it isn't great. Tandy however sits and watches way to much still, especially when you compare them to some of the others being mentioned. Hopefully he will get better has he matures.

I assumed you were talking about Blair and Crace when I first read this.

I've only watched, in person, one tandom that may be consider a top backcourt and that was Pulaski County's Fitzgerald and Butt. I'm not real sure where they stack up, but should be worth mentioning at least

I haven't gotten to see Tandy much because he was injured some of the UHA games I watched but from what I have seen his defense still isn't very good, Hollowell I think plays good enough defense not great but good. I'd say UHA has a top 5 backcourt

1. Cov Catch

2. Hopkinsville

3. Fern Creek

4. Trinity

5. UHA

6. Pulaski

7.Johnson Central

How's that look to everyone? I'd say Cooper and Ballard would also be in the top 10. Sorry I don't know anything about Adair County other than they have a pretty good record.
