April 11, 20179 yr MileIQ app is a great way to track mileage and it's free. You don't even have to turn it on when in car it's automatic. You just have to go in a log it as personal or business and you get a monthly and end of year report.
April 11, 20179 yr Author Where did the CPA get the 57k number from? Are you saying they completely made it up? That's a really good question.
April 11, 20179 yr Author ^What was it missing that caused them to deem it unacceptable? They didn't necessarily offer an excuse. It was more of "we have determined that...blah blah blah...so we are disallowing all of your claimed expenses."
April 11, 20179 yr Maybe this was asked previously but was the refund much larger than normal? If so, did you wonder why?
April 11, 20179 yr That's a really good question. I believe you've admitted that you weren't accurately tracking miles then. If so, how did the CPA arrive at that number?
April 11, 20179 yr Author I believe you've admitted that you weren't accurately tracking miles then. If so, how did the CPA arrive at that number? I told my CPA one number and somehow the other number ended up on the return.
April 11, 20179 yr Author Maybe this was asked previously but was the refund much larger than normal? If so, did you wonder why? I mean it was definitely larger but not so much that I was like "holy cow what happened?!?" Definitely larger than usual though. And much larger than this year (when things were done correctly).
April 11, 20179 yr I told my CPA one number and someone the other number ended up on the return. You need to get a lawyer or at least speak with one.
April 11, 20179 yr Author You need to get a lawyer or at least speak with one. At this point, I owe $4,654 to federal and $1,900 to the state. Would it be worth it to get an attorney and go through the legal process for that amount?

If it's not feasible to pay the tax bill off right now lump sum, one option that may be beneficial for you is to inquire about a Home Equity Line of Credit. You'd be able to pay it off in full, then be making monthly payments back to your bank. You'd end up paying interest, but it may be the most practical, affordable way to go about it.
April 11, 20179 yr Author Is that on top of the loss of this year's return? Yes, that is after what has already been deducted from my refund for this year.

Yeah, I'm weighing options. I don't want to make any high interest deals with the IRS so I'm definitely looking to pay the entire balance ASAP.
April 11, 20179 yr Yes, that is after what has already been deducted from my refund for this year. If it were me and the CPA "pulled a number out of thin air" then I would most certainly at least have a conversation with an attorney. Probably would've been my first step regardless. Also, what @Clyde said in post #110 has some bearing here. If this return was abnormal what was your response?
