Parts of Songs That Sound Very Similiar---Put Your Thinking Cap On BGP Music Fans!

Featured Replies

Okay, music fans, I'm asking you dig deep into the musical libraries of your minds for this one. I'm looking for songs, or parts of songs that you think have a very similar sound. I would like to see if you can come up tunes from different artists(maybe even from different decades or different genres) that sound eerily similar. I will post an example or two to illustrate and then you can take it and roll with it from there.

Let me start with the intros to ABBA's "Waterloo" and ELO's "Turn to Stone." I always thought the first few seconds of these sounded similar.

The obvious one - "He's So Fine by The Chiffons" and George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord". Seems like there was a lawsuit over that.

This one is very obvious, in my opinion.

The intro to Bowie and Queen's "Under Pressure" and Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby."

The Police - "Message in a Bottle".

Huey Lewis - "I Want a New Drug".

Ray Parker Jr. - "Ghostbusters".

George lost the lawsuit when a judge said he "subconsciously plagiarized" the song. He was ordered to pay Bright Tunes Music $587,000.

The week after the trial Harrison penned "This Song" and released it in November 1976.

The opening line read:

"This song, there ain't nothing tricky about it"

I'm not sure, but seems like there may have been a lawsuit over this one as well. I may be wrong.

Huey Lewis sued. Said it sounded too close to "I Want A New Drug".

He and Ray Parker, Jr settled out of court in confidence. In 2001 Lewis commented on the payment in an episode of VH1's Behind The Music.

In turn Parker sued Lewis for breaching confidentiality.
