Camping trip when I was a youngster. My brother who's 4 years older than me was splitting logs with an axe. I grabbed for one of the logs to carry it over and put it by the fire pit at the same time as my brother decided to see if he could split it again. Watched the axe head come down and stick into the log between the index finger and middle finger on my right hand.

 

Even just typing that I just shuddered a little (ACTUALLY physically shuddered) thinking about what could have happened.

I also had a near-death kind of experience. Probably about a decade ago now, I was driving back up from TN with my brother and a friend of ours, we were going about 80mph in the northbound lane, and in the blink of an eye a car traveling in the southbound lanes veers into the median, hits the grass, starts into a barrel roll and rolls all the way across the northbound lanes, threading the needle between the car I was driving and the car in front of me. I'll bet the tumbling car was within a foot of the front of my car at one point as it flew in front of us.

 

We stopped (obviously). The driver of the rolling car was alive but unconscious and bleeding from his ears. He survived, but had quite a road to recovery.
