December 4, 20169 yr Author So you think he told them that if they move the 1300 jobs to Mexico that are still going they will face the tariff he promised? If he did kudos. If he didn't well... We will just ignore the tax incentives he said wouldn't happen. I dont know what he said behind closed doors. If he was dead set on this then I suspect he did, or I would have for sure. This free trade is quelled talk dont float though Hellcats. What do you think the insurance companies said when Obamacare was enacted? Or the American people for that matter? But these are two very different things there. The American people had Obamacare forced on them. Here Trump is saying to companies in his own way, look you are hurting the people and if you leave then there are issues you are going to have to deal with. With Obamacare Trump sees that its something that needs to stay in some form, and I agree to a extent that it needs to stay to those who cant afford it, but it has to be made to where it will work for both the companies and the citizens in that its really affordable, unlike now. Its all in the delivery.
December 4, 20169 yr [h=5]The U.S. is going to substantially reduce taxes and regulations on businesses, but any business that leaves our country for another country, fires its employees, builds a new factory or plant in the other country, and then thinks it will sell its product back into the U.S. ...... without retribution or consequence, is WRONG! There will be a tax on our soon to be strong border of 35% for these companies wanting to sell their product, cars, A.C. units etc., back across the border. This tax will make leaving financially difficult, but.....these companies are able to move between all 50 states, with no tax or tariff being charged. Please be forewarned prior to making a very expensive mistake! THE UNITED STATES IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS! [/h] I don't see how a tariff that targets a particular company or individual can possibly be constitutional. Even if it is constitutional, this is an extremely dumb position to take and if Trump did not consult with some constitutional law experts before making this threat, it is an absolutely idiotic threat to make. This nation was built on a free market economy and all that is needed for the economy to thrive is the restoration of economic freedom. Holding companies hostages and attempting to force them to keep jobs here through extortion is going to accomplish nothing good. Think about it this way. If you had a billion dollars and could invest in an unprofitable company that has been forced to produce its products in the U.S. or invest in a company that freely chooses to produce its product in a country with a free economy that operates profitably, where would you invest your money? Companies cannot be held hostage. Capital will flee our shores and flow into foreign owned companies whose operations are located entirely overseas. Tariffs, even constitutional tariffs, have never made any country prosperous. This is the very kind of scheme that I would expect a socialist like Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would concoct.

Dino I agree to a point. I think Trump is gonna ruffle many feathers on both sides before he is done. Trump has not nor will follow the rules to a T I dont think. Never has.
December 4, 20169 yr :lol2: @Jesse James you gotta admit the Carrier deal this week is not even close to this tuff :taz: Facebook post. He's not president yet. I suppose he did the best he could with the leverage that he has at the time in the Carrier deal. Just a guess on my part. As far as using Facebook to get his messages out, he may be the most hacked member of Facebook in the history of the franchise. There's going to be a LOT of President Trumps on Facebook :lol2:
December 4, 20169 yr Dino I agree to a point. I think Trump is gonna ruffle many feathers on both sides before he is done. Trump has not nor will follow the rules to a T I dont think. Never has.Ignoring basic economic principles that have been shown to work for at least a few centuries will do more than ruffle a few feathers - it will tank the economy. If he spooks investors into moving their money into foreign markets, nothing else he does policy-wise will matter. This country's economy boomed as long as we enjoyed economic freedom, relative to other nations' economies. It is not necessary to impose tariffs and bully companies to improve our economy. Trump's economic experts did not believe the threats of high tariffs that he made during the campaign. If investors begin believing Trump's threats, it is going to be very bad news for American workers. You cannot force companies to operate at a loss in a capitalist economy.
December 4, 20169 yr I find it hard to believe there's much, if any, support for a 35% tariff in congress, and it would probably come from labor union Democrats, assuming there any any left. In short, I'll wait until Paul and Mitch to express their newfound belief in protectionism before I take any of this seriously.
December 4, 20169 yr Author It may very well tank it, not gonna disagree with that. But I think we are going to see. If congress goes against this, with the support the Republicans have both in the states( look at the thread that I posted with the maps) and at the Senate and Congressional levels, there are gonna be some politicians leaving office by getting voted out by the same angry voters that elected Trump. And Trump is gonna bring this to the forefront quick, way before the 2018 elections. If I were a candidate now I would be looking forward to this. The most successful people are the people who can not only adapt to change, but see it coming much quicker than others.
December 4, 20169 yr What he did earlier this week did not match what he promised. He gave us non supporters some ammo. I do hope he does these things. There is a direct line between his promises and Bernie's that several Americans could get behind. Free market economy goes out the window. :lol2: Your vision of the free market leaves America in ruins. Free market here as it should be. Sell it wherever, make it here. Liberals chase American ending policies to no end. At this rate the only thing we will make in The USA is the printing of the money for our unemployment payments. Business will adjust. You dont like it because it came from Trump. So then tell me how shifting jobs to Mexico helps the middle class? What's your remedy for the situation we find outselves in? If you can criticize then come up with a better idea.

The most successful people are the people who can not only adapt to change, but see it coming much quicker than others. It would be a mistake to overestimate the support among Republican voters for tariffs. Millions of Republicans voted for Trump only because the alternative was so very, very bad. Trump said many kooky, non-conservative things during the campaign, but the campaign is over and he needs to begin giving a little more thought to what he says. Facebook and Twitter are really not the proper places to pitch serious government policies. Republican candidates will not lose elections by supporting common sense economic reforms that run contrary to Trump's nutty proposals, which will very likely never be implemented. Targeting specific companies with tariffs is a really, really bad idea that no respected economist will support, including those who are on Trump's own transition team.

Conservatives will oppose them because they are misguided and have already been proven not to work. We desperately need to keep manufacturing jobs here but the way to do that is not to place more shackles on businesses. The right approach is to reduce taxes and remove excessive regulations that have caused so many jobs and companies to flee this country. That is the recipe Reagan used to rescue the economy from the deep hole that LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and Carter placed it in. It worked then and it will work again. Companies are not unpatriotic - they will gladly expand operations here if our government creates a business-friendly economic climate. Bullying and intimidating companies has no chance of succeeding and should not be a part of the Trump economic plan.

December 4, 20169 yr I'm certainly no economic historian but has this type of tariff ever worked? I'm not a fan and historically some fans can probably point to short doses of it working. But long term the healthy way to promote job growth is to incentives and not punishment. The confusing part is will he only punish those companies that leave moving forward ? So the Tariff doesn't affect current companies that have moved? If that is the case then it won't be a huge negative like past foreign tariffs on imports.
December 4, 20169 yr You guys are only looking at one piece of this. Dont forget his plan to reduce the corporate tax rate to 15%. That should help bring back goods made in the USA.
December 4, 20169 yr The biggest question has to be is this a tariff on all foreign imports or just a tariff on companies planning to move jobs in the future. I don't like either but there is a difference. I don't know if it's the second one if we have ever had it in this country.
