Physical war in Paintsville

 

JC defends Belfry extremely well and dominates the stat line but cannot convert trips into the redzone into points and Belfry gets a great game by Derek Wellman and a huge kickoff return by Taveon Hunter to win the battle of #1's

`JC opened the game with an 80 yard TD run by Sophomore Joe Jackson (who I am going to say will be JJ Jude v2.0

 

Pirates get a fortunate bounce after a pair of nice runs by Wellman and scoop their own fumble for a TD run to tie it up

 

Both teams then tee off on each other for the remainder of the Half. JC has a run inside the 5 that Taveon Hunter makes a strip to prevent a score. JC gets inside the 2 before the Half and Belfry gets a stop on 4th and Goal at the 2. Refs call a facemask and JC doesnt have a TO left. JC Coaches mistakenly think it is an automatic First Down and try a pass that Hunter breaks up. Was actually 4th Down so Belfry takes over and dodges a bullet.

 

Hunter returns the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score to give Belfry a 14-7 lead. JC answers with a nice drive but gets cute in a 1st and Goal and end up settling for a Field Goal. Wellman breaks another long run to set up a short Corbett score making it 21-10

 

JC once more gets in the redzone but Belfry gets a beautiful INT by Woolum to turn them away.

 

Eagles score on a deep pass to Blanton to get within 5, but Pirates recover the onside kick and Wellman ices it with two first downs.

 

402 yards for JC, 402 yards.... more than doubling Belfry...

 

Wellman for Belfry 13 carries for 133 yards

A few superlative for each team:

 

Ray Horton was the best player on the field and played a HUGE game.

 

Taveon Hunter didn't get but maybe two carries, but he was a game changer. The strip, the key pass breakup before the Half, and the Kickoff Return

 

Geordan Blanton played a great game for JC and had over 100 receiving yards.. love the way that kid plays

 

Jackson probably went over 150 and broke no less than probably 15 tackles..

 

The Freshman QB Preece made some Freshman mistakes but this kid has a great future ahead of him. He got crushed all night and despite those plays that could have broke his confidence stayed strong in the pocket and gave his team a shot at winning late.

Also for those wondering if either team would hold back... this was balls to the wall

 

Posted attendance of 6300 and they saw two teams absolutely throw haymakers at each other for 4 Quarters. JC played their full team (Stalker may have played sparingly in sounds), Belfry was at relative full strength missing only OG Jordan Scott and a Safety (which was not a big deal tonight because Woolum played Safety instead of Corner)

 

These teams teed off on each other with brutal hits and the playbooks were open. I will even argue Matney may have even went "too" open on his. Great game that Belfry can say that they both earned a win and got very fortunate to get the win.

 

Pirates did what great teams do and found ways to make big plays exactly at the times they needed it and overcame adversity time and time again.... at the same time JC controlled the vast majority of this game and controlled the stat books and had plenty of shots to take the lead or win.

 

Don't be fooled by the score this is a VERY, VERY good Johnson Central team. Maybe their best. I will be very surprised if they are not in Bowling Green and they have a very good shot of lifting the hardware.

This is a great year for KY high school football.

Great effort by both teams. Pirates find a way to win a tough one on the road. If your JC you have to feel like you let one get away. I can't imagine JC will see another team that will stifle JCs run game the way Belfry was able too. Preece made some mistakes in clutch positions but all in all played a great game.

 

Both teams will benefit from this game down the road. Hope to see both these teams in BG 5 weeks from now.

Derek Wellman is the best kept secret on this Belfry team

 

The kid is a Junior and plays one heck of a LB position (I personally think he is the beat LB in EKY) and is a machine when he gets the ball at FB.

Another thing.

 

It's astonishing to me that the JC administration puts up with the guy they allow to do there music during the games.

 

Totally and utterly distrespectful what this moron plays after the game. He takes some of the best atmospheres and game environments and cheeses them up with his immaturity.

If it wasn't for the Russell/Raceland classic tonight, I would've loved to have been in Paintsville to see this one in person. Sounds like my kind of game.

Hard to eat crow on this game. These were two great teams in a battle that comes down to the execution of a handful of plays to decide the game. Nothing more, nothing less.

He was... JC defended Belfry very well..the option was defended about as prefectly as I have seen against Belfry. In Matney's pre-game comments you could tell they were making it a point of emphasis and it showed.
